Nestled in the flat coastal terrain of Tunquén, Chile, Dune House by WHALE! stands as a bold and enigmatic architectural statement. Despite its proximity to the main road and exposure to the persistent north wind, the house presents a tapered, monolithic form that conceals its interior program. From the exterior, it reads as a sculptural body—solid, unyielding, and reminiscent of a sphinx.
Exterior Design and Materiality
The exterior walls of Dune House are clad in untreated 1x4" wood, echoing the utilitarian fences, sheds, and plot dividers typical of the region. This material choice reinforces the structure’s dialogue with the local vernacular while providing a protective barrier against the coastal elements. Minimal openings ensure privacy, creating an intriguing contrast between the austere exterior and the inviting interior spaces.
Spatial Layout and Interior Experience
Upon entering, the home reveals a carefully orchestrated sequence of rooms and courtyards, a linear alternation that breaks from the monolithic perception outside. The first floor hosts a flexible living area, integrating the kitchen with communal space, alongside two twin bedrooms, each with private bathrooms.
