Nestled in the flat coastal terrain of Tunquén, Chile, Dune House by WHALE! stands as a bold and enigmatic architectural statement. Despite its proximity to the main road and exposure to the persistent north wind, the house presents a tapered, monolithic form that conceals its interior program. From the exterior, it reads as a sculptural body—solid, unyielding, and reminiscent of a sphinx.

Exterior Design and Materiality

The exterior walls of Dune House are clad in untreated 1x4" wood, echoing the utilitarian fences, sheds, and plot dividers typical of the region. This material choice reinforces the structure’s dialogue with the local vernacular while providing a protective barrier against the coastal elements. Minimal openings ensure privacy, creating an intriguing contrast between the austere exterior and the inviting interior spaces.

Spatial Layout and Interior Experience

Upon entering, the home reveals a carefully orchestrated sequence of rooms and courtyards, a linear alternation that breaks from the monolithic perception outside. The first floor hosts a flexible living area, integrating the kitchen with communal space, alongside two twin bedrooms, each with private bathrooms. Four sliding doors allow for adaptable spatial arrangements, enhancing functional versatility.

The second floor features a master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and a lookout terrace, offering expansive views of distant coastal geographies. The main courtyard, elongated and sunlit, integrates a deck, swimming pool, gray gravel surfaces, and service areas, creating a serene outdoor sanctuary. A private courtyard with soft landscaping ensures ample natural light reaches the first-floor bedrooms while providing a peaceful retreat.

Landscaping and Sustainability

Since its completion, native species—including bolds and liters—have flourished in the shelter of the home, benefiting from protection against the harsh north wind. This careful attention to local flora and microclimates highlights WHALE!’s commitment to context-sensitive and sustainable design.
