Egret Bay Demonstration Area: Revitalizing Architecture in Huiguhu Science and Innovation Town
Egret Bay Demonstration Area revitalizes abandoned structures, blending nature-inspired architecture with sustainable design in Huiguhu Science and Innovation Town.
The Egret Bay Demonstration Area in Huiguhu Science and Innovation Town represents a fusion of modern architectural restoration and sustainable urban development. Designed by Yueji Architectural Design Office, this project transforms three abandoned structures into a dynamic space for public engagement, office functions, and recreational services.

Reimagining Architecture with Nature
Set against the pristine ecological backdrop of Huigu Lake, the project leverages the surrounding mountains, water, and forest landscapes to create an immersive architectural experience. The goal was to establish a seamless connection between nature and urban development, allowing visitors to engage with the environment through carefully designed viewing corridors, open-air spaces, and natural materials.

Strategic Renovation & Adaptive Reuse
Each of the three buildings posed unique design challenges, leading to tailored architectural interventions:
- Building 1 retained its original structure but was reinforced and modified to enhance its spatial flow.
- Building 2 was rebuilt in-situ due to its structural limitations, utilizing localized heights, roof variations, and platform extensions to blend with the landscape.
- Building 3 remained largely intact, requiring only minimal intervention to preserve its rhythmic facade.
By softening boundaries and dissolving rigid volumes, the design ensures a harmonious integration with nature, transforming previously isolated structures into open, breathable spaces.

Architectural Pathways: A Dialogue with Landscape
The project’s design emphasizes fluid movement and interaction with the natural surroundings. Platforms and pathways are strategically arranged to create a multi-layered experience, mirroring the rhythm of a journey through nature. The incorporation of openwork walls, wooden grilles, and earthy color palettes further enhances the project's organic aesthetic.
A Sanctuary for Reflection and Balance
More than just an architectural intervention, the Egret Bay Demonstration Area is envisioned as a retreat for relaxation and contemplation. Visitors are invited to pause, observe the subtle shifts in light, water, and wind, and embrace a lifestyle that resonates with the poetic harmony of the mountains and lake.
