A Modern Interpretation of Lithuanian Vernacular Architecture

Location & Design Inspiration

Nestled in the picturesque natural landscape of Druskininkai, Lithuania, the Family House by Laurynas Žakevičius Architects draws inspiration from traditional Lithuanian ethnographic barn architecture. Situated in Dzūkija, one of Lithuania’s five ethno-cultural regions, the design harmonizes seamlessly with its surroundings. Every architectural element, from its structural form to material choices, was meticulously planned to integrate with the environment, creating a sculptural presence that blends with nature.

Sustainable Wooden Construction

This one-story home with an attic reflects a fusion of traditional Lithuanian wooden construction and contemporary residential needs. The facade and roof are clad in larch wood, a material renowned for its resilience and natural aging process. Over time, exposure to sun and rain transforms the wood, with the southern side appearing more weathered than the north, creating a living facade that evolves with the landscape. Larch’s durability eliminates the need for chemical treatments, minimizing maintenance while ensuring long-lasting aesthetic appeal.

Harmonious Connection Between Indoors and Outdoors

The home’s interior concept embraces modern minimalism, with wood and white as dominant elements. Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows frame panoramic views of pine forests and meadows, dissolving the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces. This transparency enhances the home's natural ambiance while also creating a gallery-like atmosphere in the living area.

Unique Architectural Features

One of the most striking architectural elements is the openwork detail at the roof's peak, adding an artistic and dynamic visual effect. Depending on the viewer’s perspective, this feature reveals itself in varied, ever-changing patterns, reminiscent of a fusion between traditional Dzūkija architecture and Japanese design principles.

Inside, an interior balcony introduces additional depth and spatial fluidity, reinforcing the architects’ emphasis on synergy between lines and volume. The double-height living space fosters openness, while the attic level accommodates two bedrooms and a bathroom for children, ensuring privacy within the communal layout.

A Home Rooted in Nature

The house is designed to feel like a natural extension of the surrounding forest. Landscaping remains minimal, preserving the site's organic beauty. The homeowners contributed to the project by crafting raised wooden garden beds, reinforcing the home’s philosophy of harmonious coexistence with nature.

Laurynas Žakevičius Architects have successfully created a home that respects tradition while embracing modernity. Through sustainable materials, thoughtful spatial planning, and a deep connection to the landscape, this Family House in Druskininkai exemplifies the perfect blend of heritage and innovation in contemporary Lithuanian architecture.
