Feliciana Cabin by Taller MACAA

Nestled in the Sacred Valley

Feliciana Cabin, designed by Taller MACAA, is a serene retreat located near Taray, in the heart of the Sacred Valley of Peru, just 30 km from Cusco at an altitude of 3,150 meters. This unique cabin draws inspiration from the rich architectural heritage of the Incas, who were renowned for their exceptional construction techniques in high-altitude Andean landscapes.

Traditional Andean Rituals and Cultural Significance

In line with traditional Andean practices, Feliciana Cabin is named after a woman, honoring local customs. Its construction included two ceremonial stages:

• Tink'a: A foundation ritual involving the placement of the first stone.
• La Techada: Roof completion, featuring two clay bulls to honor Pachamama (Mother Earth).

During these ceremonies, offerings like chicha de jora and coca leaves were made, creating a spiritual connection between the structure and the natural environment.

Sustainable Adobe Construction

The cabin is constructed using adobe, a mix of earth, water, and straw, celebrated for its thermal regulation properties. Supported by stone foundations, the 40 cm thick walls provide excellent insulation, maintaining warmth at night and coolness during the day.

The roof features a ridge structure with eucalyptus beams, covered by carefully arranged reeds and a layer of earth, topped with tiles. This natural combination emphasizes simplicity, durability, and environmental harmony.

Panoramic Views and Daylight Integration

Facing north, Cabaña Feliciana offers stunning panoramic views of the Andes. The fully glazed façade, framed by a geometric wooden structure, allows sunlight to illuminate the interior from sunrise onwards.

Daylight interacts with the adobe walls, storing heat during the day to warm the cabin at night. This thoughtful design creates a harmonious relationship between natural light, materials, and the surrounding landscape.

Architectural Details and Interior Design

• Arched Openings: Used at the entrance, bathroom, and storage niches, adding both functionality and visual rhythm.
• Integrated Adobe Furniture: Beds, nightstands, and storage areas are constructed from adobe, creating a unified living environment.
• Bathroom Design: Divided into two zones—a dry toilet and a shower with sink, complemented by an interior garden that brings nature indoors. The carved stone sink is crafted by a local artisan.
• Recycled Elements: A stove built from an old gas cylinder and glass bricks between the shower and toilet provide colorful, diffused light, emphasizing sustainability and eco-friendly design.

Feliciana Cabin embodies a perfect balance of sustainable architecture, cultural heritage, and natural beauty. Its adobe walls, wooden beams, and panoramic glazing celebrate both tradition and modern design, offering visitors a peaceful retreat in the Andean highlands.
