Fluted Volume by Studio UF+O – A Sculptural Terracotta Landmark Redefining Jewellery Architecture in Vijayawada

In the bustling high streets of Vijayawada, where retail façades often sparkle with chandeliers, LED boards, and glossy displays, Fluted Volume by Studio UF+O emerges as a bold architectural counterpoint. Designed by Vineet Vora and Prachi Parekh, the 7,000 sq. ft. jewellery headquarters stands as a terracotta-hued monolith—minimal, enigmatic, and powerfully sculptural. This project challenges conventional retail design by prioritizing permanence, craftsmanship, and contextual sensitivity over commercial glitz.

A Terracotta Monolith That Commands Attention

Fluted Volume’s exterior is designed as a sculpted volume that is neither transparent nor opaque, but a finely calibrated balance of both. The façade is crafted from custom-cast ceramic concrete flutes in a matte terracotta finish, developed through extensive prototyping. Their rhythmic repetition creates dramatic shadows and a dynamic surface that shifts throughout the day.

To filter sunlight while maintaining privacy, the glazing is wrapped in expanded fluted aluminum mesh. Openings are strategically placed towards the north and east, allowing controlled natural light to enter without heat gain. The result is a structure that rejects typical retail flamboyance yet stands unmistakably iconic—so much so that locals now refer to it as “The Red Fort.”

A Program Rooted in Ritual, Security, and Customer Experience

Inside, the building is carefully choreographed to guide movement, manage security, and shape customer experience. High-footfall areas such as display zones, circulation paths, and cash counters occupy the lower levels. As visitors ascend, the palette becomes softer and more exclusive, with private lounges, office spaces, and secure zones. At the terrace level, a concealed gold-melting furnace reinforces the building’s functional purpose.

Studio UF+O meticulously blends ritual, function, and brand identity. Vaults remain towards the rear for security, while public spaces open towards the street, creating an intuitive flow between transparency and protection.

Light as the Protagonist of the Interior

A dramatic double-height void—aligned with Vaastu principles—pulls daylight deep into the building through a skylight. This vertical shaft becomes the heart of the interior experience. On the south side, a staircase built with ceramic glass bricks refracts light beautifully, creating a moment of surprise and delicacy against the monolithic exterior. These luminous interventions transform the seemingly secure envelope into a soothing, uplifting environment.

A Unified Architectural Language Inside and Out

The fluted exterior vocabulary continues throughout the interiors. Partitions, flooring patterns, display backdrops, and wall treatments echo the same sculptural rhythm. This cohesive materiality creates a seamless connection between brand and architecture, making the store feel like a crafted jewel box rather than a commercial showroom.

As designers Prachi and Vineet emphasize, the goal was not superficial glamour but a timeless architectural identity. The building’s language is one of solidity, restraint, and cultural belonging.

A Vision That Withstood Public Pressure

The site, open on three sides, made the construction highly visible. Passersby questioned the understated, monolithic structure, expecting a glittering jewellery showroom. Despite external pressures, the architects remained dedicated to their vision. Over time, the city embraced the building’s bold uniqueness—proof that thoughtful architecture can redefine local expectations.
