Fungus is a sustainable architecture proposal that rethinks how fashion, biodiversity, public space, and ethical production can coexist within the contemporary city. Designed by Shuvam Koirala as an Editor’s Choice entry of Weave, the project responds to one of the most urgent cultural contradictions of the present: fashion is increasingly accessible, but its speed, waste, and invisibility have created deep environmental and social consequences.

The project uses the metaphor of fungus not as a decorative idea, but as a critical design framework. Fungi are among the most primitive and resilient organisms in the ecosystem. They decompose, regenerate, connect, and transform matter into new life. In Fungus, this biological intelligence becomes an architectural principle. The building behaves like a living cultural system, where production, exhibition, repair, archive, and public interaction are connected through a circular spatial program.

Set in Milan, one of the world’s strongest fashion capitals, Fungus proposes a new civic infrastructure for slow fashion. It challenges the linear model of fast fashion by creating a public platform where garments are not simply consumed, but understood, repaired, exchanged, exhibited, and remembered.

Architecture as a Response to Fast Fashion

Fast fashion has reshaped consumer behavior by making trends instantly available and constantly replaceable. Yet this accessibility often comes at the cost of biodiversity, fair labor, material quality, and environmental responsibility. Fungus confronts this issue through sustainable architecture that makes the hidden systems of fashion visible.

The project begins with an analysis of consumer and producer perspectives. It identifies multiple forms of sustainable and circular fashion, including secondhand and vintage markets, repair, redesign, upcycling, renting, leasing, swapping, custom-made production, ethical material sourcing, and high-quality timeless design. These practices are not treated as isolated lifestyle choices. Instead, they are organized into a spatial ecosystem that can educate the public and support producers.

Rather than designing a conventional fashion center, Fungus creates a multifunctional hub where design, craft, commerce, learning, and archive are interdependent. The project argues that sustainable architecture must do more than reduce environmental impact. It must create cultural behavior change.

The Concept of Fungus: Decomposition as Renewal

The symbolic foundation of the project is deeply ecological. Fungi eat death and, in doing so, create new life. This natural process becomes the conceptual engine for the architecture. Just as fungi help forests regenerate by breaking down complex organic matter, Fungus helps the fashion ecosystem regenerate by breaking down wasteful habits, isolated production chains, and passive consumption.

The architectural narrative moves from hype, segregation, and linear fast fashion toward conscious integration, cyclic processes, and slow fashion. This shift is expressed through the project’s diagrams, spatial forms, and programmatic structure. The design does not present sustainability as a surface-level aesthetic. Site Strategy in Milan

Fungus is located in Milan, Italy, a city with a powerful relationship to fashion, design, industry, and public culture. The site analysis studies urban grain, solid and void conditions, land use, landscape, transport, access, circulation, nodes, open space, sunlight, immediate context, and vista. These layers help define the project as an urban connector rather than an isolated object.

The triangular site condition allows the architecture to respond to movement from multiple directions. Instead of creating a closed institution, the project opens itself to public flows. Its masterplan organizes landscape, water bodies, exhibition pavilions, food zones, archive spaces, interactive studios, and open gathering areas into a porous cultural field.

The phrase “the best fashion is on the street” becomes central to the design. Fungus does not hide fashion inside a sealed commercial building. It brings fashion into the public realm, where everyday visitors can observe, question, learn, and participate.

Program: Create, Exhibit, Archive

The design program is organized around three main actions: create, exhibit, and archive. These functions form the backbone of the project’s circular fashion model.

The “create” zones include micro-informative workshops, sewing spaces, fabric cutting areas, printing workshops, collaborative studios, production studios, and technical offices. These spaces allow designers, artisans, students, and the public to engage with the process of making.

The “exhibit” zones include raw fabric galleries, open retail fabric galleries, demonstration areas, fashion shows, pavilions, and public installations. These spaces turn production into a visible cultural event. Visitors do not only see finished garments. They encounter the labor, material, technique, and ethics behind them.

The “archive” zones include archive stores, interactive archives, libraries, and secondhand retail areas. These spaces extend the life of fashion by treating garments, techniques, and materials as cultural memory. In this system, archives are not passive storage rooms. They become active tools for education, reuse, and circular economy.

A Contemporary Forum for Public Exchange

One of the strongest architectural ideas in Fungus is the contemporary forum. Inspired by the public life of the Italian forum, the design creates a modern civic platform for fashion culture. The forum is not a single room. It is a spatial network of markets, demonstration zones, discussion areas, galleries, and flexible gathering spaces.

The project explores multiple forum iterations, moving from strict arrangements to more open, fluid, and plural configurations. Curved elements, red steel accents, glass structures, pavilions, and open corridors create a rhythm of movement and interaction. The forum supports vintage markets, open flea markets, occasional music festivals, craft exhibit pavilions, open food stalls, social gatherings, pocket play areas, archive galleries, live demonstrations, and workshop exhibits.

This multiplicity is essential to the project. Fungus understands that sustainability cannot rely only on regulation or private responsibility. It needs public culture. The forum gives ethical fashion a civic stage.

Underground Level as a Productive Landscape

The underground level plan reveals the project’s dense and highly functional interior system. It includes public runway spaces, fabric cutting workshops, sewing workshops, printing workshops, collaborative studios, archive areas, raw fabric galleries, central exhibition spaces, discussion areas, open libraries, green pocket spaces, display areas, archive stores, technical offices, and comfort stations.

This lower level is not treated as a hidden basement. It is designed as an active production and learning environment. Ramps connect the forum to the underground level, creating moments of curiosity and gradual discovery. Visitors can move from public exhibition spaces into workshops and archives, experiencing the full lifecycle of fashion.

The underground system also supports spatial efficiency. Storage, machinery, worktables, presentation surfaces, and circulation are organized to enable flexible production. The result is a sustainable architecture model that treats the building as infrastructure for making, not only as a container for display.

Water, Landscape, and Environmental Performance

Fungus integrates rainwater harvesting, water walls, active collection chambers, peripheral discharge, underground discharge, filtration, regulators, tanks, and pumps. These systems are not hidden technical additions. They are part of the architectural identity of the project.

The water strategy pays tribute to the canals of Milan, connecting the project to the city’s historic water culture. Water becomes both environmental infrastructure and experiential device. It cools, filters, reflects, guides movement, and creates atmospheric transitions between public and productive zones.

Landscape is also carefully programmed. The project studies solar patterns across different hours and develops seasonal planting strategies. Trees, shrubs, and groundcovers are used to create visual complexity, biodiversity, shade, and seasonal variation. The landscape is designed to remain alive throughout the year, strengthening the project’s ecological performance and public appeal.

Fungus is significant because it connects ecological thinking with cultural infrastructure. Many sustainability proposals focus on green materials or energy systems alone. This project goes further by asking how architecture can change public behavior around fashion.

It treats sustainability as a social process, not only a technical checklist. It links biodiversity with craft, rainwater systems with public space, archives with circular economy, and fashion culture with urban responsibility. By doing so, Fungus offers a model for how sustainable architecture can support ethical industries and civic education at the same time.

The project is also relevant because it refuses to simplify sustainability. It acknowledges that meaningful change requires infrastructure, awareness, access, and participation. A circular fashion future cannot depend only on individual consumer choices. It needs places where better choices become visible, available, and culturally valued.
