Beneath every bridge lies a shadow, and within that shadow, a choice. The space under Toronto's Leaside Bridge has long been defined by what it lacks: sunlight, purpose, inhabitants. Garden refuses that narrative. Instead of treating the residual landscape as infrastructure's inevitable waste product, the proposal fills it with circular gathering nodes, sculptural petal structures, permeable paving, stormwater recycling, and dense planting to build a public realm where isolation once dominated.

Designed by Mawadah Khalid and Evan Fernandes, Garden was selected as an Editor's Choice entry in the In Plain Sight competition. The project confronts a site with painful associations: the bridge and its surrounding residual spaces have been linked to isolation, inactivity, and incidents of suicide. Rather than look away, the designers ask how architecture and landscape design might transform that condition, turning an overlooked fragment of the city adjacent to the Don River and the Lower Don River Trail into an active, inhabited environment.

Occupying the Ground Plane While the Bridge Works Overhead

The fundamental architectural move here is one of coexistence. The Leaside Bridge, with its monumental concrete piers marching across the landscape, continues performing its infrastructural role overhead. Garden does not try to compete with that scale. Instead, it populates the ground plane beneath the structure with a sequence of nine smaller gathering spaces, each defined by curved and circular seating arrangements that turn people toward one another rather than lining them up in rows facing a single direction. The geometry is deliberate: these are spaces designed for conversation, for community groups, for the kind of low-key social occupation that gives residual urban territory a civic identity.

What the renderings make clear is how much the intervention depends on landscape rather than building mass to achieve its goals. Grass, trees, planting beds, and sculptural forms soften the overwhelming concrete infrastructure overhead. Permeable paving handles stormwater on site, and the planting strategy introduces biophilic qualities to a zone that currently offers very little ecological life. The result is less a conventional building project and more a unified landscape intervention that layers social, environmental, and infrastructural functions into a single surface.

Sculpted Volumes and a Generous Public Threshold

The domed structures with their horizontal banding read as landforms as much as buildings, curving volumes that echo the topography of the Don River valley rather than asserting a hard-edged architectural presence. A wide staircase entry ascends toward the building entrance, its breadth inviting casual use as seating, a gathering threshold, a place to sit and watch the waterfront beyond. The proportions are generous enough that the stairs become public space in their own right, not just a means of vertical circulation.

Inside, the axonometric drawing reveals curved staircases wrapping around a central atrium with integrated lighting that follows the spiral geometry. The decision to organize circulation as a continuous, illuminated helix turns movement through the building into a spatial experience rather than a utilitarian act. Light traces the path, drawing visitors upward and maintaining visual connection to the central void. It is a strategy that keeps the interior legible and inviting, critical qualities for a building occupying a site historically associated with disorientation and neglect.

Stone, Light, and the Interior as Civic Room

The interior atrium operates as a contemporary reinterpretation of a civic hall. Stone columns support arched openings that define a series of bays, while circular illuminated ring chandeliers float overhead, casting warm, even light across the floor below. The material palette is restrained: stone, soft lighting, generous proportions. Visitors occupy the space casually, which suggests the designers envision this as a room for lingering rather than passing through. The arched geometry lends a sense of permanence and weight that counters the temporary, forgotten character the site currently holds.

Tiered Seating and the Case for Performance Below the Bridge

The inclusion of a performance space with tiered blue seating surrounding a central floor makes an argument that goes beyond landscape remediation. Suspended acoustic elements and overhead lighting suggest the designers have thought seriously about how sound behaves in a space influenced by bridge infrastructure above. The amphitheatre configuration, with audience members on all sides, creates an inherently social arrangement where spectators are as visible as performers. For a site defined by absence and inactivity, programming a space that requires an audience to function is a pointed and effective design decision.

Why This Project Matters

Garden's strength lies in its refusal to treat the site as a problem to be solved with a single architectural gesture. Instead, the proposal layers multiple strategies: intimate gathering nodes, biophilic planting, stormwater management, sculptural form, performance programming, and generous public thresholds. Each layer addresses a different dimension of the site's difficulty, from its ecological barrenness to its social associations with isolation. The result is a project that operates simultaneously as sustainable infrastructure, social infrastructure, and landscape architecture.

More broadly, Garden represents a growing body of work by young designers who see residual urban spaces not as leftover land but as sites of significant civic potential. The Leaside Bridge will continue carrying traffic. The question is whether the territory it shadows remains abandoned or becomes something worth inhabiting. Khalid and Fernandes have made a compelling case for the latter, and the In Plain Sight competition is a fitting platform for that argument to be heard.
