Garden Tea Room by Rashid Ali Architects: A Contemporary Pavilion for Community and Education

The Garden Tea Room, designed by Rashid Ali Architects, is a striking example of contemporary architecture that merges functionality and aesthetics within a small-scale pavilion. Completed in 2023 and situated in Hargeisa, Somalia, this 30-square-meter structure showcases innovative use of materials and thoughtful design tailored to both social and educational purposes.

A Private Oasis with Public Purpose

Nestled within a large private garden, the Garden Tea Room serves as a versatile space for various activities. While primarily designed for the owner to relax and socialize, the pavilion doubles as a hub for community engagement. It hosts educational workshops aimed at empowering women with business literacy skills and provides an interactive space for young children to engage in playful, hands-on learning. The garden is open to neighbors and invited guests, fostering a sense of community through shared experiences.

Timber Pavilion: A Modern Contrast to Traditional Surroundings

The pavilion’s design embodies a contemporary approach, standing in stark contrast to the flat, textured masonry of its surroundings. Constructed almost entirely from timber, the structure showcases a commitment to experimenting with materials and techniques that are unfamiliar within the local context. This innovative approach reflects the architects’ focus on introducing sustainable, adaptable building methods to the region.

One of the project’s key considerations was its temporary nature. Designed to be constructed quickly in a workshop, the pavilion can be easily disassembled and reused in the future, emphasizing sustainability and resource efficiency.

Architectural Design and Material Innovation

The Garden Tea Room features a series of timber frames that create a visually striking envelope. The facade is adorned with a chequered pattern of plywood and tinted mirrored panels, creating a dynamic interplay between light and reflection. This design not only enhances the pavilion's aesthetic appeal but also offers functional benefits. The tinted panels allow occupants to enjoy views of the garden in privacy while blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings.

The upper section of the pavilion extends outward, forming a cantilevered canopy over the two entrances. This element, lined with polycarbonate, emphasizes the layering of materials and adds to the pavilion's contemporary look. Additionally, the short sides of the structure remain partially open, allowing natural ventilation to cool the interior, ensuring a comfortable environment.
