Geschutswerf Apartment by Studio Appelo: A Harmonious Fusion of Heritage and Modern Living in Amsterdam
A historic Amsterdam warehouse transformed into a sustainable, light-filled apartment blending modern comforts with original industrial character and craftsmanship.
Nestled along the scenic eastern quays of Amsterdam, the Geschutswerf Apartment by Studio Appelo breathes new life into a 19th-century state monument. Originally an industrial warehouse, this historic building has been meticulously transformed into a refined, contemporary residence that honors its heritage while embracing modern standards of comfort and sustainability.

A Sensitive Renovation of a Monumental Warehouse
Occupying 200 square meters, this ambitious apartment renovation project is grounded in respect for the site’s architectural history. Over the past three decades, the space had accumulated layers of modifications from various occupants, resulting in a fragmented and inefficient layout. Studio Appelo’s vision was to strip the apartment back to its core structure, exposing the monumental load-bearing beams and original materials. The result is a design that re-establishes spatial coherence while celebrating the building’s industrial past.

Unified Layout Through a Singular Intervention
Central to the design is a custom-built architectural element that subtly organizes the apartment. This single, multifunctional volume delineates secondary functions—such as the guest bedroom, storage, and sanitary areas—while simultaneously integrating cabinetry and creating a fluid circulation throughout the home. This strategic intervention emphasizes spatial continuity and allows for an open-plan living area flooded with natural light.

Sustainable Upgrades in a Historic Shell
The renovation not only enhances the spatial experience but also introduces sustainable systems for heating and energy use. By integrating modern infrastructure discreetly into the historic fabric, Studio Appelo has crafted a comfortable and eco-conscious living environment without compromising the architectural integrity of the original structure.

A Palette of Calm: Earthy Greens and Natural Stone
Materiality and atmosphere play a crucial role in shaping the apartment’s unique identity. A calming palette of earthy green tones, soft curves, and refined finishes flow throughout the interiors, creating a warm and welcoming ambiance. The kitchen is anchored by a striking natural stone island, perfect for social gatherings, while the master suite offers moments of serenity with a bathtub overlooking the internal courtyard.

Living with the Landscape
This apartment reimagines urban dwelling by connecting its interiors to the surrounding landscape. Whether sipping coffee while gazing at the canal and zoo from the cathedral-like living space or relaxing in the bedroom bath with courtyard views, the architecture invites a deeper relationship between indoor life and the city outside.

Craftsmanship in Every Detail
What elevates the Geschutswerf Apartment is its commitment to craftsmanship and detail. Every corner is thoughtfully considered, from the bespoke millwork to the tactile material choices. Studio Appelo’s design philosophy—balancing functional pragmatism with aesthetic richness—has produced a home that feels both deeply personal and universally inspiring.
