A Home Inspired by the Grape Arbor

At the heart of the design is a unique concept inspired by a grape arbor, carefully crafted to accommodate the homeowner’s grandmother. The structure features a trellis system arranged in a 2x2 meter grid, offering a natural canopy without the need for conventional walls. This open yet intimate spatial configuration enhances ventilation, daylight exposure, and connection to the vineyard beyond.

The interior height of 1.9 meters fosters a cozy atmosphere, evoking the protective enclosure of a traditional Japanese engawa while ensuring an unobstructed view of the lush landscape. As one sits within the space, the carefully framed vistas extend towards the edges of the vineyard, creating a dynamic interplay between enclosure and openness.

Materiality and Structural Expression

The architectural language of Grape Farmer's House is defined by its exposed wooden beams, minimalist columns, and large openings, all of which contribute to a light and airy aesthetic. The house’s green ceiling, an extension of the vineyard’s foliage, introduces an ever-changing visual experience influenced by the seasons.

Through a refined interplay of natural materials, sustainable construction methods, and vernacular influences, the project embodies the evolving narrative of rural Japanese architecture while ensuring modern comfort.

Reimagining Space Under the Vineyard Canopy

By extending the warmth and intimacy of the traditional grape arbor into a full-fledged residence, Keisuke Noda Architects have crafted a space that feels both nostalgic and forward-thinking.
