Revitalizing a Historic Landmark in Sint-Michielsgestel

The transformation of Gymnasium Beekvliet in Sint-Michielsgestel, Netherlands, by MVRDV blends history with contemporary design. Originally established as a Catholic seminary, the building has undergone multiple evolutions, serving as an internment camp during World War II and later as a modern grammar school. Today, this renovation breathes new life into the structure while preserving its rich legacy.

Sustainable and Functional Redesign

The renovation aimed to enhance sustainability, optimize circulation, and introduce additional art and cultural spaces. A standout feature is the sky-blue auditorium, which now forms the heart of the school. The building’s facade extension features a striking mural by artist Ian Kirkpatrick, intertwining past and future through artistic storytelling.

The architects restructured the layout to create a fluid, logical movement between classrooms and communal areas. By extending and lowering the previous roof structure, MVRDV improved the internal flow, aligning with the school’s motto: "Beekvliet Stroomt" (Beekvliet Flows). The enhanced auditorium includes a tribune, kitchen, and flexible stage, providing a dynamic environment for learning and cultural events.

A Contemporary Identity with Artistic Expression

A key highlight of the project is the facade artwork by Canadian artist Ian Kirkpatrick, created through computer-generated scripting to connect each visual element to a specific geographical point. The artwork encapsulates memories of past and present students, reinforcing the school’s identity within the broader community.

According to Winy Maas, founding partner of MVRDV, the renovation ensures that the school resonates with both its history and the evolving educational landscape:

"It is an honor to renovate our old school. Ian’s paintings integrate stories from the past with a vision for the future, making this building a true reflection of Sint-Michielsgestel.
