Habitat Module by MEII ESTUDIO: A Futuristic Home Inspired by Space Architecture in Cartagena
Space-inspired modular home in Cartagena, combining a prefabricated core, translucent materials, and warm organic interiors for flexible, futuristic coastal living.
Innovative modular living redefining urban domesticity on the historic Wall of the Sea
Habitat Module by MEII ESTUDIO transforms a strategic vantage point overlooking the Port of Cartagena into an experimental home that merges aerospace intelligence with Mediterranean warmth. Drawing inspiration from space habitat modules, the project reinterprets compact living systems to maximize efficiency, flexibility, and comfort within a 200 m² apartment.
Positioned atop the historic Wall of the Sea, the dwelling forms a striking dialogue between futuristic modular engineering and Cartagena’s maritime heritage. The result is a radical yet poetic residential concept that bridges technological precision with organic domesticity.

Design Concept: From Space Habitats to Earth-Bound Comfort
Space exploration has long influenced architecture, particularly in the pursuit of maximizing livable space through compact, intelligent design systems. MEII ESTUDIO adopts this research to create a residential “capsule” that contains all functional programs—transforming an otherwise open loft into a sophisticated ecosystem for modern cosmopolitan life.
The habitat module arrives on Earth with its core mission intact: to concentrate key services in a single compact nucleus, unlocking the rest of the plan for fluid, flexible living.

Spatial Core: A Self-Sufficient Module for Contemporary Living
At the heart of the home lies the central prefabricated core—a high-performance cluster housing:
- Kitchen
- Bathrooms
- Storage
- Climate control
- Technical systems
This compact service spine improves efficiency, reduces construction costs, simplifies maintenance, and ensures a seamless, decluttered interior layout. Inspired by aerospace architecture, the module frees peripheral space for living, gathering, and contemplation.

Materiality: Technological Envelope Meets Organic Surroundings
The module is built with a metal frame and multi-layer polycarbonate panels, offering insulation while revealing the technical veins within. The translucent skin refracts light, amplifies reflection, and emphasizes its futuristic identity. LED-framed access points transform the façade into a responsive digital interface—evoking spacecraft entry portals.
By contrast, the surrounding living zone embraces tactile warmth:
- Sandy-toned mineral floors
- Curved walls and organic geometry
- Natural textures over glossy finishes
This deliberate juxtaposition creates a sensory balance between technology and nature, symbolizing grounded living with cosmic ambition.

Color, Light, and Interior Atmosphere
Color is deployed strategically to assign personality and emotion to each space. Saturated tones and gradient chromatic transitions animate interior surfaces, generating immersive environments. The choreography of daylight, warm accent lighting, and reflective polycarbonate surfaces elevates the home’s ethereal, futuristic ambiance.
Furnishings, lighting, and art by local designers—including Sancal, PottProject, Catalina Catarsis, and Gonzalo M. Moreno—embed regional creativity within this global architectural narrative.

A Home for Nomadic Spirits and Cultural Exchange
Designed for an international family with an adventurous lifestyle, the apartment supports:
- Flexible everyday living
- Social gatherings and private events
- Creative collaboration with local artists
The project becomes not just a residence, but a cultural interface that connects global design ideas with Cartagena’s creative community.

A New Frontier for Modular Urban Living
Habitat Module by MEII ESTUDIO challenges conventional domestic typology, introducing a visionary model where space-age design meets earthly warmth. The project elevates modular prefabrication from technical efficiency to experiential luxury, setting a new benchmark for compact contemporary housing and future-forward architecture.
