Hidden House: A Private Urban Retreat by Estudio STGO in Rosario
A narrow urban house in Rosario with central courtyard, three floors, terraces, and abundant natural light ensuring privacy and openness.
Located in the heart of Rosario, Argentina, the Hidden House by Estudio STGO redefines urban living by combining privacy, light, and spatial efficiency. Completed in 2023, this innovative residence transforms a narrow, unconventional lot into a modern, functional home spanning 290 m². Designed to blend seamlessly with its urban surroundings, the house provides a serene retreat within a bustling cityscape dominated by high-rise buildings.

Maximizing Privacy and Natural Light in a Narrow Urban Lot
The site posed unique challenges. With a front width of just 3.40 meters that widens towards the center, the house occupies land that once hosted a neighborhood mechanic workshop. The architects’ primary goal was to maintain privacy while ensuring well-lit, ventilated interiors. To achieve this, the street-facing façade is completely opaque, giving the illusion of a non-residential building. Entering through a semi-covered, vegetated courtyard, which doubles as a garage, reveals the house’s true residential character.
A central core connects all three floors, optimizing circulation and creating a sense of spaciousness. This design ensures that every room benefits from natural light while maintaining privacy from surrounding urban structures. The layout highlights how clever architectural strategies can turn a challenging urban lot into a bright, welcoming home.

Ground Floor: Kitchen and Courtyard as the Heart of the Home
The ground floor emphasizes social interaction and flexibility. At its center lies a spacious kitchen, serving as the heart of daily life. Large windows create a seamless connection between the kitchen, gallery, and garden, extending living spaces outward and bringing the outdoors inside. The integration of interior and exterior spaces not only enhances the home’s functionality but also creates a sense of openness rarely found in dense urban neighborhoods.

First Floor: Bedrooms with Light-Filled Circulation
On the first floor, a centrally lit hallway organizes the three bedrooms, each designed to maximize comfort and natural ventilation. The thoughtful arrangement ensures privacy for family members while fostering a fluid connection throughout the home. The central corridor allows sunlight to filter through, enhancing the airy, cohesive feel of the residence.

Top Floor: Terraces and Versatile Living Spaces
The top floor is designed as a multifunctional space that takes full advantage of sunlight and terrace views. Winter solar exposure is maximized, compensating for ground-floor garden areas that are shaded by high party walls. One terrace features an opening facing the street, balancing the home’s hidden character with a subtle visual connection to its surroundings. This interplay of concealment and openness reflects the architects’ goal of harmonizing privacy with engagement in the urban context.

A Contemporary Urban Home with Thoughtful Design
Hidden House exemplifies how compact, narrow urban lots can be transformed into light-filled, private residences. Through innovative use of a central core, flexible interior spaces, and strategic terrace design, Estudio STGO created a home that offers both privacy and connection to the city. The residence demonstrates how thoughtful architectural solutions can overcome site limitations while fostering comfort, functionality, and aesthetic appeal.
