Architectural Concept: Merging Nature with Design

The architectural concept of Hill House draws directly from the terrain. The lower floor is an extension of the hillside, housing practical spaces such as a garage, storage, and utility rooms. This approach not only ensures efficient use of space but also minimizes the environmental footprint of the structure.

The main living areas are located on the second floor, where large windows frame breathtaking views of the surrounding forest and a serene creek. This design choice amplifies the connection between the indoors and the outdoors, making nature an integral part of the living experience.

Material Choices: Celebrating Local Resources

Horomystudio prioritized the use of local, natural materials in constructing Hill House. The exterior facade is clad in gabbro-diabase, a striking black stone sourced from the Karelia region. This unique material gives the house a timeless yet modern appearance, perfectly complementing the natural surroundings.

For the interior, natural oak dominates the design, creating warm, inviting spaces that resonate with the rustic charm of traditional Russian architecture.

Modern Features with a Nod to Tradition

Hill House incorporates modern architectural elements while honoring local cultural traditions. One standout feature is the intricately carved sliding shutters on the windows, showcasing traditional Russian saw-cut designs. These shutters not only enhance the home’s aesthetic appeal but also provide functional shading and privacy.

A balcony on the second floor is equipped with a lift mechanism, allowing fire truck access in emergencies. This innovative addition underscores the home’s thoughtful design and adherence to safety standards.
