House B Renovation: A Contemporary Extension of a Heritage Terrace in Brunswick
House B is a renovation project that combines modern design with the preservation of a heritage terrace, creating light-filled living spaces.
House B, located in Brunswick, Australia, is a stunning renovation and extension project designed by Kart Projects | Architecture. Completed in 2024, this project breathes new life into a heritage terrace, blending contemporary design with the preservation of the building’s historical character. The renovation was crafted with a young family in mind, offering a functional, bright, and private living space. The bold extension, marked by its translucent glass wall, transforms the living areas while respecting the heritage context of the original terrace.

The Design Approach: Opening Up the Tight Space
The original heritage terrace had been altered with multiple lean extensions over the years, creating a cramped and dark environment. The primary challenge for the architects was to bring natural light into the narrow and deep space, all while maintaining privacy from the street. By taking advantage of the house's prominent corner location, Kart Projects designed an extension that not only maximized natural light but also created an internal courtyard that connects the new spaces to the outdoors.

Respecting Heritage and Privacy
The design carefully respects the surrounding heritage context. The new extension dips over the living spaces and rises at the back of the block, ensuring that it does not overshadow the neighboring homes. The extension is defined by a translucent glass wall, a striking design feature that introduces natural light while allowing residents to maintain privacy from the street. The subtle movement of individuals behind the glass wall adds an artistic dimension to the home while protecting the family from prying eyes.

Minimizing Footprint and Maximizing Functionality
Instead of opting for an expansive addition, the architects chose a strategy that minimized the extension's footprint, focusing on multifunctional spaces that enhance the home’s livability. This approach allowed for the budget to be concentrated on a smaller, well-detailed area, enhancing the overall quality of the design. The layout cleverly separates spaces for children and guests in the original terrace, while a private parent’s retreat is elevated above the garage at the back, offering a sense of separation and intimacy.

Materiality and Design Detailing
The transition between the original terrace and the new extension is marked by a striking delineation of form and material. A full-width opening in the back wall, supported by an exposed steel frame, clearly defines the junction between the old and new. Inside, the renovated terrace emphasizes its original detailing, with ornamental features being preserved. In contrast, the new extension features minimalist design elements, including steel framing, glazing, and plywood joinery. This contrast in materials emphasizes the union of old and new while adding visual depth to the space.

Sustainable Construction and DIY Elements
To minimize costs and environmental impact, the construction systems were designed to allow the owners to perform much of the work themselves. Repurposing materials played a significant role in the renovation process—original bricks from the demolished section of the old house were cleaned and reused, while other leftover materials and offcuts were integrated into the final design, reducing waste. This sustainable approach aligns with the family’s values while also making the project more cost-effective.

A Thoughtful Blend of Heritage and Modernity
House B is a perfect example of how modern architectural interventions can respect and enhance a building’s historical context. Kart Projects | Architecture has successfully created a bright, functional, and private living environment that merges the old with the new. Through the innovative use of materials, attention to detail, and a sustainable approach to construction, House B offers a fresh perspective on contemporary living in a heritage-rich setting.
