The House in an Olive Grove, designed by Piers Taylor of Invisible Studio, is a minimalist retreat nestled within the Greek countryside. Built with an intentional “rough and ready” aesthetic, the home responds to its environment by utilizing locally sourced materials and traditional construction techniques. Designed for adaptability and resilience, the house reflects a deep respect for the region’s cultural and environmental context.






Contextual Inspiration and Design Philosophy
Piers Taylor’s connection to the area, which he has visited since the 1970s, profoundly influenced the design. The house draws inspiration from the resourceful, no-frills architecture traditionally found in the region. Inspired by architects like Glenn Murcutt, Taylor prioritized climate-responsive design that harmonizes with the landscape. This approach rejects the polished uniformity of modern Mediterranean villas in favor of celebrating the local specificity of materials, skills, and techniques.








The Architectural Approach
The design emphasizes simplicity, functionality, and local craftsmanship. The structure is built using reinforced concrete with local limestone aggregate, a common material in the area due to its resilience in earthquake and fire zones. The formwork process reveals the hand of local builders, with an eccentric yet logical arrangement that gives the home a unique identity.








Materiality and Construction
The house uses a palette dictated by availability, including concrete walls, floors, and ceilings. Even furniture and the kitchen are crafted from concrete. A shaded upper-level living area, framed with corrugated roofing and red oxide trusses, offers a communal outdoor space. To avoid reliance on fragile materials like glass, sliding galvanized weldmesh screens, insect screens, and plastic curtains replace traditional windows.






A Space Rooted in Its Environment
The House in an Olive Grove is integrated into its surroundings, with no gates, fences, or landscaping to disrupt the natural terrain. This seamless blending into the environment speaks to its ethos of humility and authenticity. The absence of modern design embellishments reinforces the house’s identity as an extension of its landscape rather than a foreign imposition.

The home is organized around basic human needs: shelter, shade, and communal living. The shaded rooftop area acts as a social hub, offering protection from the intense Greek sun. Inside, the concrete interiors maintain a cool, temperate environment, while the openness of the weldmesh screens allows for ventilation and connection with the outdoors.
