The House in Anglesea by MGAO is a thoughtful reinterpretation of a classic mid-century coastal home, rebuilt with care to preserve its original character while elevating it to contemporary standards. Located in the serene landscape of Anglesea, Australia, the new 200 m² residence embraces honesty in materials, simplicity in planning, and a deep connection to its surrounding native garden.

Respecting Mid-Century Origins Through a Modern Rebuild

The original home, although full of charm, suffered from poor insulation, awkward extensions, and limited structural performance. Instead of demolishing its spirit, MGAO chose a sensitive rebuild—replacing inefficient sections while retaining the recognizable mid-century essence. The design maintains the original L-shaped layout, using the existing rhythm of columns and proportions to guide the new architectural vision.

Every intervention—structural or aesthetic—was grounded in the idea of honoring the past while preparing for the future, ensuring compliance with modern lifestyle needs and Australian bushfire zoning requirements.

A Home That Breathes With the Landscape

One of the key client requests was to open the interior to the courtyard garden and introduce a greater sense of volume. MGAO achieved this by raising ceiling heights and designing expansive openings that dissolve boundaries between inside and outside.

The living area now flows effortlessly into the lush courtyard, framed by mature native trees that add depth, shade, and natural character. The connection to nature, light, and texture defines the spatial experience, allowing the home to feel both grounded and airy.

Honest, Warm, and Purposeful Material Selection

Materiality plays a central role in the project’s identity. MGAO selected elements that express simplicity and authenticity:

  • Bagged brickwork, echoing mid-century tactility
  • Blackbutt timber ceilings, offering warmth and acoustic comfort
  • Alspec windows and carefully detailed openings, controlling light and creating uninterrupted garden views
  • Laminex finishes, reinforcing functional yet refined interior detailing

These materials contribute to a atmosphere that is calming, grounded, and deeply Australian.

Functional Spaces Designed for Modern Living

The redesigned home accommodates three bedrooms and two bathrooms, each space resolved for efficiency and comfort. The private rooms remain simple and functional, while communal spaces enjoy openness, natural light, and direct landscape engagement.

MGAO’s restrained design approach ensures that nothing feels excessive or overworked—each detail supports daily life with quiet purpose.

A Familiar Home, Thoughtfully Improved

The House in Anglesea is not a reinvention, but a respectful evolution. It retains the soul of its mid-century predecessor while offering a refined spatial quality suited for contemporary living. The result is a home that feels timeless—warm, connected, and ready for the future.
