House MU by Sal Arquitetos – A Contemporary Home Rooted in Nature and Culture
House MU by Sal Arquitetos blends modern minimalism, red almagre tones, and sustainable design harmoniously with Azores’ coastal landscape.
Nestled in São Roque, Ponta Delgada, on the beautiful island of São Miguel in the Azores, House MU by Sal Arquitetos redefines contemporary living through simplicity, sustainability, and an intimate connection with nature. With an area of 175 m², this residence gracefully integrates into its coastal and urban surroundings, harmonizing modern architecture with the island’s raw natural beauty.

Site and Context
The house is strategically positioned in a consolidated residential area that enjoys both urban convenience and scenic ocean views. This duality—between the vibrancy of the town and the serenity of the sea—serves as a guiding principle for the project. The design not only respects its topographical and cultural context but also enhances the sensory experience of the place through form, texture, and color.

Architectural Concept
The design of House MU is built around volumetric simplicity—a minimalist composition that emphasizes horizontality, lightness, and openness. The architecture uses clean lines and linear forms to merge seamlessly with the land, reinforcing a fluid transition between the interior and exterior spaces. The result is an architectural language that feels timeless yet deeply rooted in local tradition.
The red almagre façade, inspired by the earthy tones of the Azorean landscape, gives the home a distinct identity. This pigment not only connects the residence to regional culture but also enhances the warmth and texture of the building’s presence, ensuring that it stands out while maintaining harmony with its surroundings.

Interior Layout and Spatial Experience
The residence is divided into two main floors, each serving distinct purposes:
- Ground Floor: Designed as the social hub, this level accommodates the living room, dining area, kitchen, and support spaces. Large openings and sliding glass panels connect these interiors to the garden, leisure area, and outdoor pool, creating a fluid indoor-outdoor experience that celebrates natural light and sea breezes.
- Upper Floor: Dedicated to privacy and rest, this level includes two bedrooms and a private bathroom, strategically oriented to capture sunlight and offer sweeping views of the landscape. The separation between social and private zones enhances both comfort and intimacy in daily life.

Sustainability and Construction
Sustainability plays a key role in the design approach. The house promotes energy efficiency through the strategic orientation of spaces, natural ventilation, and the integration of patios that encourage light circulation. The reinforced concrete structure ensures durability and stability, while the flat roof system with waterproofing and insulation enhances thermal comfort throughout the seasons.
By maximizing passive design strategies—such as cross-ventilation, solar orientation, and local materials—House MU minimizes its environmental footprint while maintaining a high standard of living comfort.

A Dialogue Between Tradition and Modernity
House MU by Sal Arquitetos reflects a perfect balance between modern design principles and cultural memory. The use of the red almagre finish, the respect for the site’s natural contours, and the restrained architectural language combine to create a home that is both contemporary and contextually grounded.
This residence stands as a thoughtful architectural statement—a modern interpretation of Azorean living, where simplicity, functionality, and emotional connection to place come together beautifully.
