Understanding the User: Architecture Rooted in Lifestyle

House Roja by JDR Arquitectos exemplifies architecture that begins with empathy. Designed for a client who alternates between his hometown of El Grullo and international work, the house prioritizes comfort, connection, and the pleasure of returning home. The architectural program starts with understanding the client’s needs, preferences, and lifestyle. Every corner, stair, and communal space is intentionally crafted to foster interaction and well-being. Even the staircase invites pause and conversation, reinforcing the project’s social and experiential focus.

House Roja, designed by JDR Arquitectos, is an exemplary residential project that masterfully balances intimacy, communal living, and the emotional connection between occupant and architecture. Located in El Grullo, Mexico, this 152 m² residence was conceived for a professional who alternates between his hometown and international work, requiring a home that is both restorative and socially engaging.

Designing With the User in Mind

At the heart of House Roja’s design philosophy is the client’s experience. Every aspect of the architectural program was informed by understanding the client’s lifestyle, needs, and personal tastes. The home prioritizes comfort and interaction, ensuring that even transitional spaces—like the staircase—encourage spontaneous conversation and connection.

Spatial Strategy: Two Blocks for Optimal Flow

House Roja is built on a misaligned corner lot, which inspired its division into two distinct blocks:

  • Communal Block: Oriented towards shared experiences, this ground floor includes a living room, kitchen, and dining area in a fluid, open-plan layout. Boundaries are intentionally blurred to foster interaction, while natural light and views reinforce a sense of spaciousness.
  • Private Block: This block accommodates three bedrooms with three bathrooms, including two en suite options and a master bedroom. Each private space takes full advantage of panoramic views of Chiautempan Park and the surrounding hills, creating a serene environment that evolves with the seasons.

The upper floor of the communal block is a full terrace, ideal for hosting unlimited guests and enjoying the scenic surroundings.

Emphasizing Privacy and Connection

To maintain privacy, the lower portion of the residence is enclosed within a solid band, providing a sense of separation from the street. Beyond this barrier, a lush garden envelops the home, gradually transitioning visitors from the urban exterior to the intimate interior spaces.

The home’s monolithic facades are clad in tinted mortar that naturally develops a patina over time, giving House Roja a timeless character and a tactile, lived-in quality.

Architectural Dialogue: Lightness, Color, and Flow

A funnel-shaped hallway between the two blocks creates a central distributor, offering a feeling of openness and transparency that contrasts with the solidity of the exterior volumes. The bold red exterior transitions to a soft, cloudy white interior, establishing a harmonious dialogue between inner and outer spaces.

A suspended bridge, seamlessly integrated with the staircase, introduces ethereal moments of passage, connecting spaces with grace and fluidity. This careful orchestration of light, color, and spatial relationships transforms daily routines into meaningful experiences.

A Pure and Emotive Architectural Language

House Roja is more than a residence; it is a space where architectural design nurtures emotional well-being, fosters interaction, and celebrates the beauty of returning home. Its combination of robust monolithic forms, intimate private spaces, and communal areas creates a residence that is both protective and inviting—perfectly attuned to the needs of modern living.
