House with a Garden by OFFICE MUTO: A Courtyard-Centered Haven in Milos
House with a Garden by OFFICE MUTO in Milos, Greece, reimagines traditional courtyard typologies with a minimalist design rooted in local materials and environmental sensitivity.
Located in Vigla, Milos, Greece, House with a Garden by OFFICE MUTO takes inspiration from the traditional architecture of the region, particularly the sheepfolds—simple rectangular structures accompanied by adjacent courtyards. These traditional designs were adapted to the specific needs of the site, emphasizing protection from the plateau's strong winds and fostering a harmonious indoor-outdoor living experience.

The Role of the Courtyard
The courtyard serves as the centerpiece of the project, offering a sheltered outdoor space while organizing the residence into distinct rectangular volumes. These volumes directly connect to the courtyard, eliminating the need for secondary circulation pathways. This design enables a solid spatial coherence and integrates the interior with the exterior. Openings in the volumes frame views of the surrounding landscape, establishing a deep connection between the courtyard and its natural environment.

Design and Materiality
The house employs a restrained and contextually sensitive material palette. The walls are constructed from stone excavated on-site during the creation of the foundations and an underground cistern for collecting rainwater. Concrete complements the stone, adding structural support while maintaining the building's minimalist aesthetic. Together, these materials create a mineral architectural language that emphasizes the horizontality of the structure and reinforces the unity of the courtyard.

Integration with Nature
The strategic layout of openings, along with the use of natural materials, allows the building to blend seamlessly into the rugged landscape. The design reinterprets the local architectural heritage by creating an elegant yet functional space that responds to the site's challenges and opportunities.

House with a Garden exemplifies how architecture can be rooted in local traditions while addressing contemporary needs. Its courtyard-centered approach not only enhances living comfort but also reflects a thoughtful respect for the surrounding environment. By using locally sourced materials and integrating indoor and outdoor spaces, the house stands as a testament to timeless and sustainable design in Milos.
