In Matosinhos, Portugal, architecture studio fala has transformed a suburban plot into a striking statement of form and playfulness. The inverted roof house design challenges conventional pitched roof silhouettes, instead creating a bold profile where one roof plane is curved and the other straight. This unexpected geometry breaks away from the monotony of typical suburban architecture, giving the home a distinctive and memorable presence.

A Suburban Form Reimagined

The project begins with a defined building footprint, yet the form is anything but standard. The inverted roof, paired with a translucent plinth base, creates a floating, almost sculptural effect. The volume recalls an exploded box, both structured and playful, offering a refreshing counterpoint to the surrounding uniform houses.

Playful Façade Composition

The façade is a white canvas enlivened with punctuated windows — both round and square — arranged to suggest faces or animal-like figures. Color is a defining element, with blue and green shutters concealing openings, transforming the exterior into a collage-like composition. Each vertical and slanted plane is distinguished by carefully chosen hues, layering the building with visual complexity and character.

Interior Spatial Experience

Inside, the architecture intentionally resists predictability. The building’s structural system is revealed through five slender, light green concrete columns, each appearing in unexpected locations and even interrupting daily movement. One column on the terrace stands as a visual gesture, supporting nothing, blurring the line between structural necessity and artistic expression.

The ground floor is open to the garden, seamlessly connecting to the office space above. Double-height volumes, angled walls, and gently sloped ceilings contribute to an interior experience that is dynamic and unconventional. The top floor master bedroom is housed within an extruded quarter-circle space, emphasizing the house’s love of irregular forms.

Material Layers and Construction

The inverted roof house design is built as an assemblage of varied surfaces — straight, folded, cut, curved, and tilted. Materials such as concrete, marble, and glass brick define boundaries while overlapping and intersecting to create depth. These surfaces are anchored by bold columns that pierce through the architecture, giving the interiors a sculptural rhythm.
