House Within Three Gestures by Fala: A Unique Architectural Marvel in Gondomar, Portugal
"House Within Three Gestures by Fala transforms suburban design with innovative geometry, vibrant colors, and a minimalist, functional layout."
A Bold Take on Suburban Architecture
The House Within Three Gestures by Fala redefines the possibilities of suburban design. Located in Gondomar, Portugal, this 180 m² residence challenges conventional architectural norms with its playful geometry, minimalist aesthetic, and thoughtful spatial organization. Designed in 2021, the house harmoniously integrates form and function, embodying Fala's signature style of whimsical yet practical architecture.

Site and Conceptual Design
A Plot That Inspires Creativity
Nestled on an irregular suburban plot, the project embraces the site’s unique constraints to create a dynamic and innovative design. The misshapen parcel informed the three core gestures that define the house:
- A tilted roof, adding depth and character.
- A curved perimeter wall, softening boundaries and creating fluidity.
- A fragmented interior layout, ensuring a balance between private and communal spaces.
Secondary spaces, such as the laundry room, break away from the main structure, becoming functional yet striking architectural features.

Architectural Composition
Exterior Design: A Symphony of Shapes and Colors
The house is an assemblage of two primary forms:
- A tilted half-circle that dominates the roofline.
- A slender spire that punctuates the structure and houses the laundry tower.
The exterior showcases a bold color palette of white, black, and blue, with a quirky pink triangular chimney perched atop the slanted roof. This playful yet precise approach makes the house stand out as a vibrant addition to the neighborhood.

Interior Layout: Order Meets Whimsy
Inside, the house maintains a concise material palette:
- White walls create a neutral backdrop.
- Wooden floors provide warmth and contrast.
- A concrete ceiling adds an industrial edge.
Key edges are highlighted with dark wood strips, creating a clean yet dynamic aesthetic. The spaces are organized by a grid system, punctuated by exceptions like the curved wall and stepped divisions.

Functional and Spatial Innovation
Balancing Public and Private Zones
The interior is divided into public and private zones, with communal spaces flowing organically around the central living area. The grid-like organization ensures efficiency, while the curved walls and tilted roof introduce a sense of motion and creativity.

Maximizing Secondary Spaces
Secondary areas, such as storage and utility rooms, are cleverly integrated behind the stepped layout. The laundry room, transformed into a spire, becomes an architectural statement in itself.

Sustainability and Materiality
Minimalist Material Choices
The use of durable, locally sourced materials like concrete and wood enhances the project’s sustainability. The minimalist palette not only reduces visual clutter but also supports efficient construction practices.

The House as a Statement Piece
Fala’s design challenges traditional notions of suburban housing. Its curved walls, asymmetrical roof, and vibrant color palette make it a conversation piece. Passersby might mistake it for a gallery, a shop, or even a chapel, but the house is unapologetically residential—a playful, perky refuge amidst its conventional surroundings.

Redefining Suburban Living
The House Within Three Gestures is more than a residence; it’s a bold architectural experiment that celebrates creativity and functionality. Fala's innovative use of geometry, color, and materiality transforms an irregular plot into a vibrant architectural landmark.
Whether viewed as a gallery, a home, or a sculpture, this house embodies the perfect blend of whimsy and practicality, redefining the suburban landscape in Gondomar, Portugal.
