Hudson L-House by Steven Holl Architects is a striking contemporary residence located in Hudson, New York, designed for acclaimed modern furniture gallerists Mark McDonald and Dwayne Resnick. Spanning 165 m² (1,700 sq ft), this compact yet expressive L-shaped home blurs the boundaries between architecture, art, and landscape.
Set on a once-vacant urban lot, the structure completes the existing neighborhood fabric while carving out a south-facing green courtyard, offering privacy, natural light, and a serene outdoor room at the center of daily life.


Architectural Concept & Material Expression
Corrugated Aluminum Skin with Cerulean Interior
The home’s form is defined by a simple L geometry clad in custom “finger-width” corrugated aluminum. This cost-efficient, maintenance-free exterior shifts with the sun throughout the day, creating kinetic shadows and a luminous façade.
The color palette is a thoughtful balance of white outer walls, cerulean-green inner surfaces, and soft blue canopies—a subtle nod to the historic Southern tradition of “Haint Blue”, believed to protect homes from spirits.
Inside, a warm and minimal palette dominated by birch plywood sets a neutral stage for the owners’ exceptional midcentury furniture collection, including rare works by Frank Lloyd Wright, Marcel Breuer, Alvar Aalto, and Rudolph Schindler.
