IDK Apartment Renovation: A Modern Approach to Space Optimization
A compact 82 m² apartment renovation in Cologne, optimizing space with sliding partitions, natural light, and flexible, sustainable urban living.
Revitalizing a 1970s Apartment for Contemporary Living
Located on the outskirts of Cologne, Germany, the IDK Apartment Renovation by Demo Working Group reimagines a compact 82 m² living space within a large-scale residential complex from the 1970s. Designed for a family of four, the project tackles modern spatial needs while embracing flexibility and adaptability in urban living environments.

Adapting to Modern Spatial Standards
In contemporary Germany, the average living space per person is approximately 47 m², making this apartment relatively small by today’s standards. The architects sought to align the home with contemporary spatial expectations while addressing key concerns about living standards, efficiency, and the transformation of existing structures. The goal was not only to renovate but to create a dynamic, multipurpose living environment that evolves with the family's needs.

Flexible Layout with Sliding Partitions
One of the most significant changes was the removal of all non-load-bearing walls to enhance openness and flexibility. The apartment’s layout consists of two distinct halves: one dedicated to private rooms and the other to communal living. Instead of conventional walls, the design integrates sliding partitions made from T-slot aluminum profiles, a material commonly used in mechanical engineering. This system allows the apartment to shift between configurations, providing both privacy and openness as needed.
With the partitions open, the children's rooms seamlessly expand into the living space, creating a larger communal area. Meanwhile, the bathroom doubles as an open laundry room, optimizing functionality within the limited square footage. The continuous interplay between private and shared spaces fosters a dynamic and fluid living experience.

Maximizing Natural Light and Openness
A key feature of the renovation is its emphasis on natural light and transparency. Large windows enhance brightness throughout the apartment, while the strategic use of glass and open shelving promotes an airy atmosphere. By incorporating minimalist design elements and light-reflecting materials, the architects achieved a sense of spaciousness despite the compact size.

Sustainable and Adaptive Living Solutions
This renovation project highlights the potential of adapting existing residential structures to meet evolving lifestyle needs. By repurposing materials, maximizing space efficiency, and utilizing innovative partitioning systems, the IDK Apartment Renovation offers a forward-thinking model for urban living.
