Il Trateggio: A Modular Architecture Vision for Milan's Future
Rethinking architecture through modularity: A tower that adapts, relocates, and reinvents space in Milan's evolving urban landscape.
In a world where adaptability and sustainability are reshaping architectural priorities, "Il Trateggio" emerges as a bold experiment in modular architecture. Designed by , this project "Co-Design Milan - "IL TRATEGGIO" received the People's Choice Award in the Co-Design Milan 2020 competition and explores a critical question: What if buildings could have an afterlife?
Set in the evolving CityLife district of Milan, Il Trateggio reimagines the urban tower as a movable, modular form that not only serves present needs but also anticipates future transformation. At its core, the project redefines the static identity of architectural form and use.

Enhancing Interaction through Spatial Openness
The project envisions a vertical workspace for creative minds, structured around shared open-plan studios. These interconnected design environments aim to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, where interaction between designers becomes a catalyst for innovation. Instead of isolating professionals within private studios, Il Trateggio invites open dialogue and creative synergy within its core structure.
Economic and Spatial Efficiency
A key feature of the tower lies in its economic logic. By eliminating the boundaries between individual studios and integrating them into a singular open space, rental and maintenance costs are significantly reduced. This communal approach not only democratizes access to workspace but also reduces environmental and financial overheads — a fundamental goal of modular architecture.
Strategic Placement in Urban Context
The tower is carefully situated along Piazza Tre Torri, aligning itself both formally and visually with Milan's existing towers: Lo Storto, Il Dritto, and Il Curvo. Il Trateggio enters this dialogue as a new vertical volume, characterized by a rhythm of layered horizontal slits that fragment its façade, giving the impression of both structure and movement. Its alignment secures unobstructed views and affirms its contextual relevance.

Architectural Language and Symbolism
Echoing the architectural language of its site, Il Trateggio asserts itself as a vertical gesture—a tower that completes the visual triad of the Tre Torri ensemble. As its name suggests ("The Hatching"), it takes on a graphic and structural role in the cityscape, with its distinctive façade pattern becoming a visual metaphor for creative emergence.
Adaptability and Free Plan Flexibility
In line with contemporary urban design principles, Il Trateggio is conceived with a free plan that allows its internal layout to adapt to any functional requirement. Whether as co-working studios, public galleries, or educational hubs, the tower accommodates evolving social and economic uses over time. The project reflects the ethos of modular architecture by embedding transformation into its DNA.
Architecture Beyond Its Physical Life
What truly distinguishes Il Trateggio is its vision for architectural afterlife. The design proposes that the modular elements of the tower can be dismantled and relocated once the structure no longer serves its original purpose. The leftover footprint in Milan can then be converted into an open-air amphitheater — continuing its public utility in a different form. This transforms the building from a singular, permanent solution into a mobile, cyclical asset for the city.
Construction Strategy
Detailed structural diagrams reveal an efficient and rationalized assembly process involving modular beam-to-column connections and prefabricated facade panels. The tower's radial plan enables coherent circulation and functional zoning, with service cores and pedestrian flows clearly defined to optimize vertical and horizontal movement. Its construction logic is aligned with prefabrication, a hallmark of sustainable, modular architecture.
From Milan to the World
In a poetic postscript, the final visualizations depict Il Trateggio relocated across varied terrains — from rural landscapes to ocean cliffs, urban parks, and even a speculative lunar surface. These imaginative scenarios reinforce the project’s central narrative: architecture should not be bound to place, but liberated through modularity and vision.
