In-Touch: Exploring the Cycle of Existence through Contemporary Funerary Architecture
A journey through contemporary funerary architecture—where nature, memory, and transformation converge in layered spatial rituals.
At the heart of countless cultural beliefs—ranging from atheism to deeply spiritual worldviews—lies a common focal point: the transformation that occurs after death. Regardless of whether the afterlife is envisioned as a divine realm, a return to nature, or simply a continuation of matter in a new form, the unifying thread remains the same—the transition of the human body and spirit into something else. This moment of transformation transcends belief systems and invites reflection on what it means to move from life to death, and potentially, to life once again in a new form.
“In-Touch” is a spatial journey designed to immerse the visitor in this profound cycle. It is not merely a monument to memory or a place of mourning, but a conceptual and physical experience. As visitors walk through the layered structure, they encounter each phase of transformation—starting from the moment of death, through decay, renewal, and re-emergence in nature. Each layer is designed to evoke a different emotional and cognitive response, gently guiding individuals through a personal meditation on mortality, time, and continuity.

In an age where environmental consciousness and emotional healing are both central to the evolution of architecture, contemporary funerary architecture has emerged as a genre that is both poetic and practical. “In-Touch” embodies this shift, blending modern design principles with symbolic transitions of light, material, and spatial thresholds. The architecture itself becomes a narrative—one that moves from darkness to light, stillness to motion, and separation to connection.
Created by designers Buğra Kıyar and İlayda Ergin (ilayda49), the project is a visionary response to the need for spaces that do more than house grief. It opens a dialogue between the living and the dead, the personal and the universal. By engaging with this space, visitors are encouraged to not only contemplate the cycle of death and rebirth, but to get in-touch with the larger rhythms of nature and existence.
“In-Touch” is not only a meditation on loss—it is a celebration of transformation, offering a serene yet powerful setting for reconciliation, memory, and renewal through the lens of contemporary funerary architecture.
