Indian Lake House by PJCArchitecture: A Harmonious Lakeside Retreat
A modern-rustic lake house in the Adirondacks, blending Shou Sugi Ban, sustainable materials, and stunning waterfront views for serene living.
Nestled in the heart of the Adirondacks, the Indian Lake House by PJCArchitecture is a tranquil lakeside retreat designed for a retired couple who once graced the opera stage. This modern lake house seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings, combining elements of Japanese minimalism and rustic cottage charm to create a unique and inviting space.

Architectural Design & Concept
PJCArchitecture envisioned a three-story, 1,910-square-foot home with two bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, alongside a 158-square-foot boathouse featuring an additional bedroom. The architectural approach focused on blending with the natural landscape while ensuring functionality and comfort. The homeowners, with a deep appreciation for materiality and form, sought to balance a clean, modern aesthetic inspired by a Japanese tea house with the warm, inviting ambiance of a traditional lakeside cottage.
To achieve this, the exterior is clad in Shou Sugi Ban, a charred wood siding technique from Japan that enhances durability and seamlessly blends the home with the forested surroundings. The house also pays homage to Adirondack vernacular architecture, incorporating pitched roofs, natural stone walls, and wood siding, but with a contemporary twist that keeps the design fresh and timeless.

Strategic Site Integration & Vertical Design
Situated on a steeply sloped lakeside lot, the home’s design had to accommodate strict zoning constraints, limiting the building footprint. The solution? A vertical layout that maximizes space while maintaining a subtle presence when viewed from different vantage points.
From the driveway entrance, the house presents itself as a modest single-story structure with a simple gable roof. However, upon crossing a bridge to the main entrance, visitors discover that they are actually on the top level, with two additional floors below. When viewed from the lake, the home appears as a towering yet organic form, rising in harmony with the surrounding forest. The southeast corner features a striking glass and wood cube, strategically positioned to frame panoramic views of Indian Lake.

Interior Spaces: A Balance of Light & Warmth
The third-level entrance opens into a spacious living area with a cathedral ceiling and floor-to-ceiling windows, flooding the space with natural light. The heart of the home is a powder-blue kitchen, accentuated by white shiplap walls and forged wrought-iron stair railings, reinforcing the cottage-like warmth. A central sculptural volume mirrors the home's exterior massing, subtly dividing the space while maintaining an open flow.
Descending the skylight-lit staircase, the primary bedroom on the second floor extends into a screened terrace, offering uninterrupted views of the lake. The lowest level houses a guest suite, a bathroom, a laundry area, and a mechanical room, with sliding glass doors that open directly to the waterfront boathouse, ensuring a seamless indoor-outdoor connection.

Sustainability & Material Choices
The eco-conscious design of Indian Lake House extends beyond aesthetics. The use of Shou Sugi Ban not only provides a durable, low-maintenance facade but also reflects the homeowners’ appreciation for sustainable building techniques. The home incorporates high-performance windows, locally sourced stone, and energy-efficient systems, ensuring a low environmental footprint while maximizing comfort.

A Lakeside Sanctuary That Sings
More than just a vacation home, Indian Lake House is a harmonious retreat where architecture, nature, and personal expression converge. Designed with both serenity and social gatherings in mind, the residence offers a timeless blend of modern minimalism and rustic charm, capturing the spirit of the Adirondacks while providing a refined escape for its owners.
