Jacona House by TAAB – A Harmonious Dialogue Between Architecture, Landscape, and Light

Architectural Narrative Nestled on the serene banks of the Celio River in Jacona, Michoacán, Jacona House by TAAB redefines modern Mexican residential architecture through a poetic dialogue between structure, nature, and materiality. The house sits gracefully on a triangular plot, its form shaped by the river’s gentle curve. A sinuous granite wall emerges from this geometry—folding, opening, and enclosing—creating a sense of both protection and embrace, as though the architecture mirrors the movement of the water it neighbors.

Spatial Composition and Program The design is divided into two distinct wings organized around a central garden that welcomes visitors at the entrance.

• The northeast wing, stretching along the longest side of the triangle, contains the master bedroom and library on the ground floor. A secret passage—a bookshelf door—leads to an underground wine cellar, offering a touch of mystery and discovery. The upper floor hosts the guest bedrooms, providing privacy and scenic views of the surrounding landscape.
• The southern wing is dedicated to daily life. It houses the kitchen, dining, and living areas, all seamlessly extending to an outdoor cantilevered porch. This transition blurs the line between inside and out, filtering the morning sunlight while shielding from rain.

Every space in Jacona House is oriented thoughtfully toward natural light, cross-ventilation, and framed views of the gardens and river, embodying a perfect balance between openness and intimacy.

Materiality and Atmosphere Material choices at Jacona House root it deeply in its context while enhancing its sculptural character. The outer granite wall, dark and dense, conveys strength, permanence, and shade—a fortress against time and climate. Inside, earthen plaster walls with a burnished finish and exposed wooden beams evoke the warmth and craftsmanship of traditional Michoacán homes.

Light—both natural and artificial—is treated as an architectural material. It gently traces the walls’ curves, highlighting the textures of stone and earth, and creating a rhythmic play between shadow and glow throughout the day.

Landscape Integration The surrounding landscape is not merely decorative—it is an extension of the architecture. Native vegetation, including pirules, agaves, papelillos, and caliandras, intertwines with the built form, softening its geometry. The design invites the wind, fragrance, and rhythm of nature inside. From the shaded interiors, one experiences the living pulse of the garden—the shimmering leaves, the scent of soil, and the whisper of the river.
