Jacupiranga Garden: A Masterpiece of Tropical Landscape Architecture by Gabriella Ornaghi and Bianca Vasone
Jacupiranga Garden blends Atlantic Forest natives with tropical plants, creating sustainable, vibrant landscapes that enhance microclimate and daily living.
Located in São Paulo, Brazil, the Jacupiranga Garden is a stunning 400 m² landscape architecture project completed in 2019 by the acclaimed team of Gabriella Ornaghi and Bianca Vasone Arquitetura da Paisagem. This tropical garden harmoniously integrates native species of the Atlantic Forest biome with architectural elements, creating an immersive environment that enhances both the natural ecosystem and the residential space.

Innovative Landscape Design Rooted in Biodiversity
The Jacupiranga Garden exemplifies a cutting-edge approach to sustainable landscaping by combining tropical native plants with species endemic to the Atlantic Forest. This intentional botanical selection fosters a robust, scenic environment that not only beautifies the space but also delivers meaningful environmental benefits and improves the site's microclimate.
The dense, lush garden features a rich diversity of plant species characterized by varied textures, vibrant flower colors, and multiple vegetation layers. Tall tree canopies strategically frame the garden’s visual axes, creating dynamic light and shadow play while supporting a thriving understory of herbaceous and shrubby plants. This multilayered composition enhances biodiversity and establishes a balanced, ecological landscape.

Architectural and Functional Elements Enhancing the Garden Experience
Beyond its botanical richness, the project thoughtfully integrates architectural and functional components that make the garden an essential part of everyday life for residents. At the garden’s entrance, a striking structure adorned with graphic tiles introduces an artistic motif that recurs throughout the space, unifying the overall design with visual continuity.
The recreational zone features a sleek pool embedded within a wooden deck that doubles as a relaxing seating area. This combination promotes social interaction and outdoor leisure while seamlessly connecting the home to its natural surroundings.

Edible Garden on the Upper Floor: A Sustainable Oasis
Capitalizing on abundant sunlight, the upper floor hosts a carefully curated edible garden. Organized landscape-style, this section cultivates oil-producing, medicinal, aromatic, and edible plants, offering not only aesthetic appeal but also functional uses that support sustainable living practices and encourage residents to engage with their environment on a daily basis.

Photography and Visual Storytelling
Captured beautifully by photographer Ana Mello, the Jacupiranga Garden’s imagery highlights the thoughtful relationship between architecture and landscape. From exterior facades and lush courtyards to intimate interior views overlooking the garden, the photos tell the story of a harmonious coexistence between built form and nature.
