Innovative Kindergarten Design in Torricella-Taverne

The Kindergarten Torricella, designed by Celoria Architects, is a remarkable example of contemporary educational architecture in Torricella-Taverne, Switzerland. Completed in 2021, this 1,500-square-meter facility integrates seamlessly into its urban environment, serving as the first phase of a larger master plan for public school and sports infrastructure.

A Vision Rooted in Context and Functionality

The project is situated above an existing Civil Defence Shelter, utilizing the underground level for essential functional spaces such as the kitchen, storage areas, and technical rooms. This design approach ensures efficient spatial organization while maintaining a strong connection between the school and the surrounding landscape.

An infrastructure wall plays a pivotal role in redefining spatial relationships within the site. This wall serves as both a structural and aesthetic element, harmonizing the new educational facility with the urban fabric.

Architectural Concept: A Linear and Layered Composition

The architectural language of the kindergarten is defined by three distinct horizontal layers, visually linking the podium, school floors, and sky. This tripartite composition creates a cohesive identity, emphasizing the project's public nature.

The building itself is a compact, three-story volume, designed to integrate effortlessly with future sports fields and pedestrian walkways. A carefully planned ramp system ensures smooth connectivity between different site elements, reinforcing accessibility.

Transparency and Interaction with Nature

The east and west façades of the school feature extensive glazing, promoting a fluid visual connection between the park and the sports field. In contrast, the north and south façades are intentionally solid, framing the structure with a strong architectural presence.

Outside, a dedicated enclosed garden offers a safe and engaging outdoor space for children, while the adjacent public park and green areas remain untouched, preserving the site's natural character.

A Child-Centered Approach to Space Planning

Designed with children’s needs in mind, the kindergarten features four distinct sections, each defined by a rhythmic interplay of solid and void spaces. Vertical circulation elements strategically connect different levels, ensuring intuitive movement throughout the building.

At the entrance, four separate access points lead into a welcoming atrium, which serves as the central hub. From here, children can access the movement space, an adaptable area with a movable partition wall that allows for flexible use. The covered outdoor area extends learning and play beyond the interior, seamlessly integrating indoor and outdoor experiences.
