King and Phillip Residences Entrances by fjcstudio
A refined entrance blending classical geometry with timber leaf vaults, concealed lighting, and sustainable materials for a dramatic spatial experience.
Contemporary Interpretation of Classical Heritage
The entrance design for King and Phillip Residences by fjcstudio reimagines traditional architectural language through a contemporary lens. Located in the heart of Sydney's Colonial Heritage Precinct, the design draws inspiration from the classical proportions and materiality of iconic neighbors like the Supreme Court and St James Church, while introducing a refined modern aesthetic rooted in sustainability and craft.

Spatial Drama Through Natural Motifs and Reflections
At the core of the design is a leaf-inspired vaulted ceiling, composed of curved timber panels that mirror the delicate vein patterns of Eucalyptus leaves. These intricately ribbed and jointed panels stretch from deep within the foyer out to the loggia, creating a seamless spatial flow. Reflections and subtle lighting are employed to visually expand the compact 76 m² footprint, generating an illusion of an endless forest canopy floating above the timber wall datum.

Sculpted Warmth and Refined Detailing
The interior expression prioritizes warmth, simplicity, and spatial generosity. The foyer’s palette features Tasmanian oak paneling, stained Hoop pine ceilings, lightweight glass fiber-reinforced concrete, and green marble detailing. The design is elevated by refined gestures like a recessed brass inlay floor signage, a leather seat integrated into the wall paneling, and concealed floor lighting that lifts the timber elements visually above the ground plane.

Seamless Transitions and Thoughtful Planning
Transitions between the loggia, foyer, and lift lobby are made fluid through gently curved walls and mirrored surfaces that amplify space. Even the interior of the lift continues the design narrative, with timber wall paneling and a leaf-motif ceiling that reflect the foyer’s atmosphere. Despite spatial constraints, the layout remains efficient, accommodating concierge services, mailboxes, and resident seating with minimal footprint and maximum spatial grace.

Lighting as Illusion and Atmosphere
Collaborating with Electrolight, fjcstudio developed an invisible lighting scheme that reinforces the design's conceptual clarity. Indirect and concealed lighting techniques enhance the floating appearance of timber vaults and accentuate the rhythm of the brass inlays and vertical timber joints, enriching the immersive spatial quality.
