Kocanda Kravsko II Hotel and Event Space by ORA: A Historic Ceramics Factory Reborn for Contemporary Hospitality and Culture
Historic ceramics factory transformed into a hotel and event space, blending industrial heritage, recycled materials, and contemporary architectural interventions.
Located in the village of Kravsko, Czechia, Kocanda Kravsko II is a masterful adaptive reuse project by ORA (Original Regional Architecture), transforming a former Baroque-era ceramics factory into a multifunctional hotel and event space. The original site, once an inn along the Prague–Vienna route, evolved into a renowned 19th-century ceramics workshop before falling into disrepair. Today, it has been sensitively revived by local owners to serve as a destination for social gatherings, hospitality, and adventure tourism.

At the heart of the redevelopment is the site's iconic factory chimney, now crowned with a glowing neon circle—a contemporary landmark that draws visitors inward. The factory buildings have been restored with care, retaining their industrial authenticity while embracing new functions. A concrete ramp and exterior stair lead guests to the main entrance, which now serves as a reception and staff area, formerly used for mixing clay. Here, original plaster molds used for casting ceramics have been preserved and reimagined as sculptural installations, paying homage to the site's artisanal legacy.

The former plaster mold warehouse, with its unique elongated form and timber-brick construction, has been converted into accommodation facilities. Due to the building’s narrowness, a gallery-like porch on the southern side replaces an interior corridor and is constructed from salvaged oak intended for firewood—an elegant expression of material recycling and sustainability. Guest rooms on the ground floor open directly onto this porch, while the upper rooms feature glazed partitions, exposed beams, and floors made from reclaimed boards. The north façade retains its original steel window frames, creating a layered dialogue between old and new, while new structural supports stabilize the earth-shifted walls.

Interior spaces are minimalist and luminous, highlighting raw textures, recycled ceramic elements, and functional yet artistic details. In some cases, plaster molds have been turned into furniture or light fixtures, reinforcing the narrative of reuse. The most modern addition, the sorting plant, houses a restaurant and greenhouse, ideal for community events and celebrations. A dramatic welded steel staircase leads to an attic banquet hall, preserving its raw industrial character for gatherings, weddings, or exhibitions.

With thoughtful attention to heritage preservation, environmental stewardship, and architectural storytelling, ORA’s design breathes new life into the historic Kocanda Kravsko complex—an inspiring model for regenerative architecture and cultural tourism.
