Embracing the Landscape

When the expansion of Yan Yean Road threatened their previous home, the family made a courageous choice—not to leave, but to move deeper into the land that had always captured their hearts. Working closely with the architects, they envisioned a home that would be expressive, idiosyncratic, and deeply attuned to both the site and its inhabitants. The once pine-covered land was cleared to reveal the native landscape beneath, allowing the house to be woven into the environment rather than imposed upon it.

Architectural Concept: Scattered Masonry Forms

Korinda House is not a singular architectural gesture but a constellation of masonry volumes that cascade along the slope. Each block is clad in raw, earth-toned timbercrete, giving a tactile, robust, and weathered character reminiscent of the surrounding bush. Private spaces—including the master suite, painting studio, and children’s bedrooms—feature generous daybed nooks that capture sunlight, while interiors are softened with v-groove timber boards, recycled timber floors, and expressive wallpapers, creating a warm and intimate atmosphere.

Fluid and Inviting Interstitial Spaces

The spaces connecting the volumes are where life unfolds. Designed for fluid indoor-outdoor living, these gathering areas include kitchens, dining zones, and living spaces defined by rough-sawn hardwood, exposed brickwork, polished concrete floors, and brick pavers that extend into courtyards. The architecture encourages daily activities to flow seamlessly between the home and the surrounding landscape.

Central Courtyard and Functional Beauty

At the heart of the home is a lush courtyard, a sheltered clearing framed by bush and building. One side functions as a gallery corridor, showcasing family artworks and future creations. The kitchen is a centerpiece of both function and design, featuring a sculptural steel footrest, deep blue cabinetry set into timbercrete walls, and carefully considered details that embody care and delight.

Resilience and Sustainability

Rising with the land, Korinda House layers spaces from kitchen to pool terrace, quiet den, and a library above the trees, where its folded roofline frames distant views. Built for a high BAL-rated site, the home is fire-resilient and off-grid ready, equipped with a solar array, battery storage, water tanks, and fire-safe materials. The surrounding garden is a tapestry of drought-tolerant natives, bush stone, and natural renewal, extending the home’s dialogue with the environment.
