Transforming an Industrial Relic into a High-End Office Landmark

Located at No. 525 North Xizang Road in Shanghai, the KYMS Technology Centre is a bold architectural transformation by Atelier Archmixing. Once the site of the Bell Factory, the complex included two primary buildings—a 9-storey and a 7-storey structure—along with a device room and a transformer substation. In response to growing commercial demands, the client envisioned a high-end office building renovation that would breathe new life into the aging industrial site while boosting its market appeal.

Addressing Urban Context and Commercial Challenges

Despite the client's ambition, the commercial office market in Shanghai was already saturated in 2019. Simply upgrading the interior would not be sufficient to attract discerning tenants. The outdated surroundings and the closed-off nature of the site further compounded the issue. With the main entrance on the east side—adjacent to a busy urban artery—the lack of openness and poor pedestrian flow undermined its accessibility.

To overcome these challenges, both the client and the design team aligned on a radical strategy: to revitalize the building into a modern urban landmark with strong visual identity and street presence.

A High-Impact Facade Strategy

Atelier Archmixing approached the renovation with a straightforward yet bold design concept: to turn the building’s façade into an urban advertisement. By enveloping the exterior in a sleek silver aluminum panel curtain wall, they preserved the industrial DNA while elevating the architectural language to match contemporary aesthetics. The result is a glimmering surface that plays with sunlight and motion, giving the building a strong street-level impression.

This reflective, high-profile cladding not only meets visual expectations but also significantly enhances the commercial value. The tactile metallic texture, paired with clean, modern lines, positions the KYMS Technology Centre as a beacon within a largely monotonous urban fabric.

While the façade saw a complete transformation, the design team preserved the core structural framework and floor slabs, particularly on the street-facing elevation.
