Lake Refuge by Leila Dionizios: A Harmonious Retreat in Nature
Lake Refuge by Leila Dionizios is a sustainable, modular retreat blending Scandinavian design, natural materials, and biophilic elements in Rio.
Nestled in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Lake Refuge is an architectural masterpiece designed by Leila Dionizios for CasaCor Rio 2023. Spanning 80m², this sustainable and nature-integrated space embodies tranquility, comfort, and Scandinavian minimalism with a tropical twist.

A Sustainable Sanctuary
Designed from two repurposed shipping containers, Lake Refuge seamlessly blends into the surrounding landscape, reinforcing the concept of biophilic design. Dionizios prioritizes natural materials, such as linen for curtains and bedding, alongside wood accents that add warmth and authenticity. A standout feature is the sustainable wood tiles by AZU, an exclusive creation by architect Marcelo Jardim.

A Lake-Centered Design
The name Lake Refuge reflects its defining element—an artificial lake masterfully designed by Bernardo Vieira in collaboration with Beleza Pura Lagos e Jardins. This serene water feature fosters a seamless connection between the bungalow and its natural surroundings, enhanced by an outdoor deck for relaxation and social interaction.

Lush Landscaping & Native Flora
With landscaping by Ana Veras, the bungalow is enveloped by lush greenery. The lake is adorned with waterlilies and pickerelweeds, while its banks feature native species such as Guaimbé, Neomarica, Clusia, Bromeliads, and Ripsalis. A highlight of the design is the Bromeliad Odoratas, a native Atlantic Forest species with a striking silver hue that adds an element of sophistication.

A Blend of Brazilian and Contemporary Design
Inside, the suite is furnished with iconic Brazilian pieces, including the Jangada armchair and ottoman by Jean Gillon, alongside works by Jorge Zalszupin and Jader Almeida. The luxurious off-white boucle-upholstered bed from Reveev features dimmable lighting, a USB port, and wireless charging, ensuring both style and functionality.

An Immersive Outdoor Bathing Experience
The bathroom, situated in an open-air setting, incorporates existing stone walls and trees into its design. Key elements include a custom-designed Corian bathtub, a raw stone countertop, and the Ajajá stool by Hugo França, all placed under a glass skylight for an immersive experience amidst the treetops.

A Perfect Balance of Architecture & Nature
Lake Refuge exemplifies sustainable architecture, modular design, and eco-conscious luxury, offering an inspiring retreat that fosters harmony with nature.
