Lenka House by Khosla Associates – A Contemporary Courtyard Home in Bangalore

Lenka House, designed by Khosla Associates, is a serene contemporary residence nestled within a gated community in Bangalore’s eastern corridor. Surrounded by a lush green neighborhood, the design draws inspiration from the row of majestic Kadamba fruit trees lining the northern entrance road. The architects envisioned a home that blends regional craftsmanship, natural materials, and modern architectural vocabulary, while staying deeply rooted in the cultural essence of Karnataka.

Natural Stone Jaali – A Striking Facade

The home’s 100-foot-long north boundary wall is crafted from Sadharhalli stone, a locally sourced material historically used in rural Karnataka for securing land. Designed as a stone jaali (lattice wall), it is constructed entirely without mortar using tongue-and-groove joinery, showcasing both sustainability and traditional skill. This contemporary reinterpretation of vernacular stone architecture connects the house to its cultural heritage while offering privacy and ventilation.

The boundary wall is punctuated by a vivid yellow entrance door, framed in polished cement, which acts as a focal point and leads into the entrance courtyard before opening to the main living spaces.

Courtyard-Oriented U-Shaped Design

The U-shaped layout of Lenka House embraces an east-facing garden, ensuring the interiors are bathed in gentle morning light. The ground floor houses a double-height living room, dining and bar area, kitchen, AV room, and two guest bedrooms. Public spaces seamlessly open to shaded verandas, encouraging interaction with the landscaped garden.

The first floor accommodates two additional bedrooms, a study, and a family room, all visually connected to the garden below. Some spaces, such as the living room, family room, and guest bedroom, are designed with pitched sloped roofs, while others feature flat modern roofs, creating an interesting balance between tradition and modernity.

Material Palette – Harmony of Tradition and Modernity

The material expression of Lenka House merges warmth with simplicity.

  • Clay bricks clad parts of the structure, adding insulation and reducing maintenance.
  • Kota stone and beige Italian marble floors bring an earthy yet refined texture.
  • Timber-clad ceilings and polished cement finishes add richness and depth.
  • White plastered walls balance the design with a minimalist elegance.

The interiors strike a careful balance between openness and intimacy, with sunlight filtering through courtyards and skylights to create playful patterns of light and shadow.

Art, Landscape, and Sculptural Integration

The landscaped gardens are thoughtfully curated with existing trees, sculptures, and focal features. At the foyer, a bronze sculpture by artist Dimpy Menon captures attention, seemingly balancing on a stone sphere above a reflecting pool. Illuminated by a circular skylight, it sets the tone for the home’s sculptural and contemplative aesthetic.

At the southern edge of the property, a towering Willow tree is seamlessly integrated into the design, forming a private side court and reinforcing the dialogue between architecture and nature.
