Les Barraques House: A Contemporary Tribute to Catalonia’s Vernacular Coastal Architecture
A vaulted stone house inspired by Costa Brava fishermen’s huts, blending tradition, structural clarity, natural materials, and flexible Mediterranean living.
Les Barraques House stands as a powerful manifesto by Arc Studi Arquitectura—an architectural project that reclaims the identity of Catalonia’s coastal heritage while embracing contemporary living. Located in Palafrugell, Spain, the 280-square-meter residence reinterprets the artisanal traditions, material honesty, and atmospheric qualities of the region’s iconic fishermen’s huts. The project becomes not only a home but a declaration of values: defending anonymous local architecture and celebrating a collaborative, craft-driven design process.

A Modern Reinterpretation of Fishermen’s Coastal Huts
Drawing inspiration from the quiet coves of the Costa Brava, the house evokes the timeless imagery of whitewashed fishermen’s shelters—arched structures rooted in sobriety, functionality, and simplicity. Arc Studi Arquitectura reimagines these humble maritime buildings as refined architectural elements, using traditional vaults, natural stone, and tactile surfaces to ground the home in its territorial context. The design captures the essence of Mediterranean life: the balance between protection and openness, light and shadow, solidity and breeze.

Architecture Rooted in Structure, Flexibility, and Democratic Space
At the core of Les Barraques House is a structural system that defines every space with clarity and equal importance. Rather than imposing hierarchy, the architecture democratizes its layout—allowing rooms to flow organically and eliminating rigid spatial boundaries.
Minimal partitions, none of which reach the ceiling, allow the home to remain flexible and easily adaptable over time. This approach ensures that the building’s essence lies in its structure rather than its transient program. Should lifestyles change, the house can effortlessly evolve, accommodating new uses without modifying its fundamental architectural identity.

Four Vaults, Stone Boxes, and Climatic Intelligence
The building’s geometry is both clear and poetic. Four large masonry vaults—each 5 meters wide and 9 meters long—span the home’s primary spaces. These proportions echo the dimensions of traditional huts in nearby Calella de Palafrugell, grounding the project in historical continuity.

Supporting the vaults are thick-walled service boxes clad in local stone. These flat-roofed elements counteract the structural thrusts of the vaults while accommodating storage, utilities, and functional services. Their proportions, half the size of the vaults, create a rhythmic interplay of mass, void, and structural tension. Beyond their functional role, the boxes act as passive climatic regulators, enhancing thermal mass and stabilizing the interior environment throughout the seasons.

A Sensory Architecture of Contrast and Flow
The experience of inhabiting Les Barraques House is orchestrated through a rhythmic sequence of sensory contrasts—compression and release, opacity and openness, introversion and extroversion. The vaulted spaces open towards the exterior, inviting landscape and light, while the enclosed stone boxes offer refuge and introspection.

Green courtyards weave into this architectural choreography, functioning as natural climate moderators and environmental purifiers. By integrating vegetation, porous shading, and cross-ventilation, the house forms a micro-ecosystem that supports sustainable living. Together, the geometry, massive walls, natural materials, and spatial transitions evoke the timeless feeling of inhabiting a protective “cave”—a sanctuary shaped by earth and craft.

Les Barraques House is a quiet yet profound homage to the architectural memory of Catalonia’s coastline. Through artisanal construction, structural clarity, and a sensitive dialogue with place, Arc Studi Arquitectura redefines how tradition can inform contemporary architecture. The house celebrates heritage while offering adaptable spaces for modern life—an enduring example of contextual design rooted in authenticity and craft.
