Nestled in the vibrant historical center of Varna, Bulgaria, the LH Residence by STARH architects is a compelling example of contemporary residential architecture harmoniously integrated into a historically rich urban fabric. Completed in 2023, this residential refurbishment and extension project spans 1,157 m², combining modern design sensibilities with the charm of the city’s early 20th-century architecture.

A Contextually Sensitive Design

Located at the intersection of Slivnitsa Boulevard, the main pedestrian artery leading to the iconic Sea Garden, and Stefan Karadja Street, the LH Residence occupies a prime corner plot surrounded by historic buildings and dynamic city life. While the original two-storey structure dates back to 1923, it holds “ensemble importance” under Cultural Heritage Legislation, rather than being classified as immovable cultural property.

Aware of its responsibility to the past, STARH approached the project with a philosophy that balances respect for historical context with a bold contemporary vision. The design reimagines the existing structure, preserving its original decorations while introducing modern architectural qualities that enrich the urban landscape.

Architectural Approach: Modern Meets Contextual

STARH’s design strategy emphasizes a contemporary expression that honors the building’s history without overshadowing it. The four residential floors above a ground-floor café have been reorganized for optimal functionality and urban engagement. By using a rigid façade grid, the building achieves visual harmony with surrounding structures, maintaining the city’s historical rhythm while asserting a fresh architectural identity.

The project employs a suspended system of fiber cement panels from Swisspearl Largo on the façades and roof, forming a so-called “fifth façade” that complements the city skyline. Innovative window systems such as Reynaers Aluminium SlimLine 38 and CS 77 provide energy-efficient glazing solutions that enhance both comfort and aesthetics.

Interior and Public Spaces

Inside, the LH Residence is designed to accommodate modern residential lifestyles while preserving a connection to its historical roots. The ground floor functions as a welcoming public space and café, fostering community interaction and activating the urban street life. Residential floors feature thoughtfully reorganized apartments that combine contemporary comfort with timeless elegance.

The refurbishment prioritizes sustainability and durability, incorporating high-quality materials from Knauf, Kone, Mapei, and Velux.
