Liquid House (Casa Líquida), designed by architect Luiz Pataro, reimagines domestic living as a platform for artistic expression and communal life in São Paulo, Brazil. Originally initiated by Julia Feldens in 2015, Liquid House serves as a vibrant artistic residency, welcoming over 2,000 artists to date. The project challenges traditional ideas of privacy in residential architecture, offering a unique blend of integration, creativity, and collective living.

A Renovation that Expands Possibilities

In 2023, Luiz Pataro undertook the ambitious renovation of a neighboring house, transforming it into an annex that expands Liquid House’s capacity and functionality. The new addition introduces flexible studio spaces, rehearsal rooms, social areas, and artist suites, elevating the residency’s role as a dynamic cultural hub.

A key design intervention is the addition of a sleek metal structure, juxtaposed against the original 1960s building. This structure organizes circulation, connecting studios, kitchens, rehearsal spaces, and private rooms, while maintaining fluidity throughout the site. On the ground floor, the metal gallery links the interiors to a lush central patio, emphasizing openness and adaptability.

Seamless Connection Between Old and New

Accessed via an external staircase, a more intimate gallery on the upper level leads to four artist suites. These balconies function not just as corridors, but as vital transitional spaces that encourage social interaction, redefine circulation, and highlight the connection to the surrounding courtyard. The thoughtful interplay between the old house and the new annex preserves Liquid House’s essence of collective experience and community.

Two newly created spaces — a rehearsal room and an elevated terrace — bookend the metal galleries. These areas strengthen the relationship between indoor and outdoor environments, with transparent glass windows opening fully to merge the rehearsal space with the garden, embodying the project’s core philosophy of fluid living.

Architectural Fluidity Through Textures and Levels

Curtains are used innovatively throughout the residence, offering flexible divisions between spaces. In studios, curtains allow for quick transformations between private work areas and larger shared studios. Outdoors, flowing curtains frame garden views, soften the metal framework, and reinforce the sensation of a “roofless room,” creating an enchanting mix of shelter and openness.

Luiz Pataro also skillfully uses topography to foster interaction. The level difference between the existing houses and the garden allows the rehearsal room to act like a grandstand overlooking performances, while wide built-in benches blur boundaries between architecture and nature.

A New Model for Artistic Residences

Liquid House stands as a model for how renovation, adaptive reuse, and collaborative living can be harmoniously intertwined. Luiz Pataro’s architectural vision preserves the authenticity of the original residence while boldly extending its possibilities, resulting in a creative and playful space designed for community, inspiration, and artistic freedom.
