Mawi Garage by Dhanie & Sal: A Rugged Tribute to Off-Road Vehicles in South Tangerang
Mawi Garage: An innovative, steel-clad garage in South Tangerang, merging vehicle storage with sustainable design.
In South Tangerang, Indonesia, the Mawi Garage emerges as a robust renovation project by architects Dhanie & Sal. Encompassing an area of 488 m², this structure is not just a garage; it's a meticulously designed space that houses the owner's collection of off-road vehicles and motorcycles, along with a loft that serves as a private office and living quarters. Photographed by Ernest Theofilus, this project stands as a testament to efficient design and a deep respect for materiality.

Design Inspired by Utility and Masculinity
The architectural narrative of Mawi Garage is deeply influenced by the masculine essence of the vehicles it houses. The choice of steel as the primary material reflects the rugged character of these off-road automobiles, embracing the utilitarian aesthetic that defines them. The design process was governed by a strict adherence to steel modules, ensuring that every element, from plates to hollow tubing, was utilized without waste.

Structural Integrity and Aesthetic Harmony
The existing structures of the pavilion were preserved and became the foundation for the new design. Steel hollows form the primary structure, while steel plates create fins that clad the building, arranged at angles to mimic the iconic operable windows of off-road vehicles. This arrangement not only pays homage to the design of the vehicles but also facilitates natural ventilation, allowing breezes to sweep through the garage.

Thoughtful Composition of Openings
The garage features a careful arrangement of slits and square openings, following the rhythmic pattern of the steel structure. On the loft level, a panoramic window opens up the space to the surrounding garden, offering expansive views and connecting the interior with the exterior landscape.

A Statement on Impermanence
Mawi Garage is a reflection on the impermanence of all things. It stands as an efficient structure that can adapt over time, either finding new purposes or gracefully deconstructing to be reborn from its steel origins. This philosophy underscores the garage's design, making it not just a functional space but also a meaningful tribute to the lifecycle of materials and the transient nature of utility.

Conclusion: A Model of Efficient and Thematic Design
Mawi Garage by Dhanie & Sal is more than a space for vehicles; it's a bold architectural statement that marries functionality with a profound respect for design and material efficiency. It serves as a rugged tribute to off-road culture, encapsulating the essence of its inspirations in every steel module and angled fin, while standing ready to embrace the changes the future may hold.
