MAWU Café by ANTI – Architecture in Surabaya, Indonesia
MAWU Café in Surabaya by ANTI – Architecture blends bold white metal design, natural light, and open connectivity for café and office.
A Contemporary Café and Workspace in the Heart of Surabaya
MAWU Café, designed by ANTI – Architecture, is a 200 m² café and private office located in the vibrant Ketabang neighborhood of Surabaya, Indonesia. Completed in 2022, the project redefines the idea of a small urban café by blending contemporary architecture, functional design, and community-oriented space.

Bold Architectural Identity
Wrapped in white metal cladding, the café stands out as a bold contrast to the dense urban fabric surrounding it. The new structure introduces a modern design language, with dynamic overlapping planes and a playful geometric form that both complements and contrasts the adjacent existing building.

Light, Air, and Openness
The architectural concept emphasizes transparency and openness. Large openings and gaps between walls invite natural light and ventilation, creating ever-changing interior atmospheres. Sunlight interacts with angled planes, producing dynamic patterns across the surfaces, while air circulation keeps the café fresh and inviting for visitors.

Material Expression
True to its architectural intent, MAWU Café leaves many of its materials and structural details exposed. This choice not only highlights the raw textures of construction but also transforms functional elements into part of the café’s aesthetic expression. The result is a space that feels both minimalist and sculptural.

Spatial Connectivity
The project blurs the boundary between indoor and outdoor experiences. Through an open-plan layout and carefully placed wall openings, visual connectivity is maintained across different levels. This creates a seamless relationship between the café’s social spaces and the private office above.

Dual Program: Café and Workspace
The design cleverly integrates two functions across the old and new structures.
- The existing building houses the bar, kitchen, and indoor dining area.
- The new extension accommodates a private office and semi-outdoor dining terrace, enhancing the café’s role as a space for both work and leisure.

A New Landmark for Ketabang
More than just a café, MAWU Café has become a cultural and architectural landmark in Surabaya. By combining bold contemporary architecture, natural light, and social connectivity, it offers a refreshing take on urban café design in Indonesia.
