MAYA HARVEST
The Meeting Point of Holiday and Cocoa Culture
In the Comalcalco region in the state of Tabasco, Mexico, we worked on the design of a holiday village that combines the rich history of cacao, one of the most important symbols of ancient Mayan culture, and sustainable tourism. Within the scope of the Xocolatl Competition, our goal was not only to design an accommodation area, but also to create a unique place where guests are intertwined with culture, nature and experience. The Concept of Our Project: The main inspiration for our project was the spiritual, economic and social importance of cacao in the Mayan civilisation. In this direction, we considered the holiday village as a structure that is both in harmony with nature and carries historical meaning. In the design, we blended local craft techniques with modern approaches and presented sustainability and aesthetics together. Design Highlights: Accommodation Areas: We designed modular units with a permeable structure in nature. We built each unit with natural materials in a way that allows visitors to integrate with the environment. Experience Areas: We designed interactive spaces that offer the opportunity to experience cacao harvesting, processing and traditional Mayan chocolate making. Recreational Spaces: With spaces for yoga, hiking trails and outdoor activities, we aimed for guests to relax and explore nature at the same time. Cultural Integration: In collaboration with the local community, we planned multi-purpose spaces for activities such as handicrafts, gastronomy and storytelling. What did we do in the process? Starting from the land analysis, we analysed parameters such as climate, topography and local vegetation in detail. We researched the architectural and aesthetic elements of the Mayan culture and blended these elements with modern needs. We developed environmentally friendly solutions from sustainable material selection to construction methods. We completed our project with concept development, drawings, 3D modelling and presentation materials. Thanks to this competition, we not only improved our design skills, but also discovered the importance of understanding cultural richness and reflecting it in architecture.
