MELANGE
CRAFTED SPACES FOR CURATED JOY
Pimpri-Chinchwad, located in Maharashtra, India, is a thriving metropolitan area that
forms a twin city with Pune. Renowned for its strong industrial base, expanding
infrastructure, and rapid urban development, it has emerged as one of the nation's fastestgrowing residential and industrial hubs. Governed by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal
Corporation (PCMC), the city has evolved from a modest industrial town into a significant
center for technology and economic growth.
As part of the Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR), Pimpri-Chinchwad plays a crucial role in
India's engineering, manufacturing, and automotive industries. Its economy and population
have flourished due to the presence of international companies, IT parks, and esteemed
educational institutions. The city enjoys excellent connectivity through major highways,
the Pune Metro, an efficient railway network, and reliable bus services.
A public facility designed to host meetings, sports events, and various activities for people
of all ages, the Recreational Centre is envisioned as a key pillar of community well-being.
This center will serve as an engaging space where individuals and families can participate
in physical fitness programs, social gatherings, and personal growth activities. Equipped
with modern amenities and a diverse range of programs, the center will cater to different
age groups and interests, fostering a healthy and well-rounded lifestyle.
Aim of the Project
The primary aim of the Recreational Centre is to provide a dynamic and
inclusive environment that promotes physical activity, community
engagement, and personal well-being.
Objectives of the Project
Enhancing Community Well-Being: Establish a welcoming space that caters to
the social, emotional, and physical needs of residents across all age groups.
• Encouraging Physical Fitness: Provide access to sports facilities, gyms, and
outdoor recreational areas to foster a healthy and active lifestyle.
• Strengthening Social Bonds: Create a hub for cultural events, gatherings, and
group activities that promote meaningful interactions within the community.
• Accommodating Diverse Interests: Design multifunctional spaces that support a
variety.
Scope of the Project
• Develop a forward-thinking architectural design tailored to diverse user groups,
incorporating sports facilities, cultural spaces, and wellness areas.
• Implement sustainable construction methods, including green architecture, energyefficient systems, and eco-friendly materials.
• Design versatile spaces that can accommodate various activities, events, and user
needs while ensuring adaptability and functionality.
Limitations of the Project
• Site and Environmental Constraints: The project must account for site-specific
challenges, including size, topography, and environmental conditions, requiring
strategic adaptations to ensure feasibility.
Need for the Project
• Impact of Urbanization: Rapid urban expansion in India has resulted in densely
populated cities, limiting access to open and recreational spaces. The Recreational
Centre aims to address this gap by offering a dedicated area for physical activity
and community interaction.
• Health & Wellness Concerns: A sedentary lifestyle is increasingly leading to
health issues like obesity and cardiovascular diseases. The centre will provide
gymnasiums, swimming pools, and sports courts to encourage routine exercise and
promote overall well-being.
• Strengthening Community Engagement: Urban growth can sometimes lead to
social isolation and weakened communal ties. Through events, cultural activities,
and group programs, the centre will foster social connections and create a stronger
sense of belonging.
• Mental Well-being: With rising stress levels and mental health concerns in urban
environments, the centre will include meditation rooms and green spaces that
support relaxation, mindfulness, and stress relief.
• Addressing Facility Shortages: Many areas lack adequate recreational facilities
that cater to a broad range of interests. By providing diverse amenities—from
fitness programs to educational workshops—the centre will bridge this gap and
serve as a valuable resource for leisure and personal development.
Site selection criteria
The choice to focus on a recreational center for my thesis stems not only from its
architectural significance but also from personal interest and an awareness of societal
needs. Having grown up in an urban setting, I have observed the shortage of accessible,
well-designed recreational spaces that serve people of all ages. This experience sparked a
passion for creating environments that foster health, inclusivity, and social interaction.
With a deep appreciation for physical activity and community involvement, I recognize
how recreational centers serve as more than just fitness hubs—they cultivate a sense of
belonging and shared purpose. I believe architecture plays a vital role in promoting mental
well-being, encouraging healthier lifestyles, and strengthening community bonds, all of
which are embodied in the recreational center concept.
From an academic perspective, this project presents a compelling challenge. Designing a
recreational center requires the seamless integration of diverse functional spaces—such as
sports facilities, a swimming pool, gymnasium, cafeteria, green areas, and essential
services—while ensuring spatial coherence, accessibility, and sustainability. It provides an
opportunity to engage with various architectural principles, including zoning, circulation,
material innovation, and environmental responsiveness.
1.Location & Accessibility
• Proximity to residential areas, schools, and offices are nearby
• Well-connected by roads and public transportation (buses, metro, railway)
2. Land availability & size
• Sufficient space for indoor and outdoor recreational activities
3. Demographics & target audience
• High population density with demand for recreational facilities
• Presence of families, youth, and working professionals
• Nearby educational institutions
4. Infrastructure & utilities
• Availability of water supply, electricity, and sewage facilities
• Proximity to emergency services (hospitals, fire stations)
5. Economic & financial feasibility
• Potential for revenue generation (membership, events, food courts, etc.)
• Government policies, subsidies, or funding opportunities
The choice to focus on a recreational center for my thesis is in Pimpri chinchwad
Site Justification: Why Pimpri-Chinchwad?
The decision to propose Pimpri-Chinchwad as the site for my recreational center thesis
project is rooted in its urban significance, development trajectory, and personal connection
to the area. As one of the fastest-growing urban hubs in the Pune Metropolitan Region, it
presents a dynamic setting for designing a public facility that caters to a diverse and
expanding population.
Having spent time in this locality, I have observed its rapid urbanization—characterized
by expanding residential areas, commercial growth, and infrastructural advancements.
Despite these developments, there remains a distinct lack of well-designed, inclusive
recreational spaces that accommodate community needs. Recognizing this gap reinforced
my choice of Pimpri-Chinchwad as an ideal location where a carefully planned
recreational centre could deliver meaningful social benefits.
The area boasts strong connectivity through major road networks and public transit
systems, including the Pune Metro and BRTS corridors, ensuring accessibility for a broad
demographic. Additionally, its proximity to educational institutions, IT parks, and
residential neighbourhoods guarantees a steady user base that would benefit from
wellness-oriented, socially engaging spaces.
From an urban planning perspective, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation
(PCMC) actively promotes sustainable development and civic enhancements, making it a
suitable environment for innovative, user-centric architectural interventions aligned with
broader city objectives.
Selecting this site also allows me to incorporate personal insights into the design, ensuring
a context-sensitive approach that aligns with the locality’s unique cultural, spatial, and
environmental characteristics.
Ultimately, Pimpri-Chinchwad presents a strategic and impactful location for the proposed
recreational centre—one that addresses pressing urban needs while reflecting my deep
engagement with the city and aspirations as an architect.
