Milieu: The Next Generation of Sustainable Architecture
Milieu – Shaping Sustainable Cities with Biomimicry and Innovation for a Resilient Future.
Atmospheric membranes are articulated above the sunken island, forming an enclosure that protects, purifies, and heals the environment. Milieu is a GLOBAL ENTERTAINMENT NUCLEUS, epitomizing sustainable architecture, entertainment, and cultural evolution. It serves as a sports hub, an attraction, and a celebration of cinema—a seamless integration of sustainability and urban vibrancy.

Surviving the Forces: Biomimicry in Architecture
Technological advancements through biomimicry have been developed to confront climate change, ensuring a resilient future.
Globalization and the City
As urban populations rise, skyscrapers continue to dominate skylines, generating concentrated pollution. However, the 23rd century has introduced new technologies, including membrane architecture. This innovative response to extreme climatic conditions in Los Angeles enables structures to enclose cultural elements while mitigating environmental impact.
Milieu incorporates the latest advancements in thermal cooling and water desalination, utilizing natural resources to create a self-sustaining ecosystem.

The Unique Identity of Los Angeles
Los Angeles thrives on its two largest cultural industries—Cinema and Sports. To preserve these defining characteristics and prevent the city from becoming a generic metropolis, Milieu seamlessly integrates:
- Entertainment: Film Makerspace, Cinema Experience, and Studio Theme Park
- Sports: Professional Athletics, Virtual Reality Gaming, and Robotic Fighting
Architectural Resilience Through Biomimicry
The future of sustainable architecture lies in resilience, achieved by emulating adaptable biological structures:
- The Hood – A protective shell ensuring structural integrity.
- Tendrils – Appendages designed to facilitate airflow and circulation.
- Tentacles – Serving as a defense mechanism against environmental threats.

Angelino Immersion: Entering the Entertainment Nucleus
Welcome to Los Angeles' entertainment nucleus, Milieu. Visitors can immerse themselves in the culture of the city through floating transportation pods, which access unique biomimicry-inspired structures such as:
- Film Makerspace
- Professional Sports Coliseum
- Robot Fight Arena
These pods are constructed from membrane technology, allowing seamless mobility and access to different sections of Milieu.
Sustainable Measures: The Aquathermal System
The Milieu ecosystem integrates a tentacle-like aquathermal system, ensuring thermal comfort through radiant cooling. The system efficiently regulates internal temperature by transferring solar-heated aquathermal fluid to different architectural segments. Additionally, the structure features a desalination filter, converting ocean water into potable drinking water.
Encapsulation: A Protective Embrace
Inspired by jellyfish biomimicry, the Milieu membrane is composed of a specialized Scyphozoan Hydrogel, which provides both structural durability and environmental healing. This innovative membrane is engineered for optimal energy efficiency and self-sustainability.
About the Project
This visionary project was conceptualized by Antonio Carbajal, Michael Horan, and Joey Ali.
Winner of Di - Generic Cities: Los Angeles, Milieu is a groundbreaking contribution to the future of sustainable urban environments.
