Designed by Martens Willems Architecten, the Miller Apartment Building is a striking example of contemporary residential architecture in Maastricht, spanning 3,425 m². Located on the edge of the historic working-class neighborhood of Wyckerpoort and the new urban boulevard “De Groene Loper” (The Green Walkway), this project thoughtfully bridges the old and the new, creating a seamless connection between different urban layers.

For decades, Wyckerpoort was hemmed in between a busy highway and railway lines. The recent tunneling of the highway and the development of a broad, leafy boulevard above it revitalized the neighborhood, offering new urban connectivity. The Miller Apartment Building, together with adjacent ground-level houses designed by the same office, defines the northern edge of De Groene Loper, providing a coherent and elegant transition from residential to boulevard spaces.

The building’s architecture responds carefully to its context, acting as a hinge point between various spatial scales. It connects the 1950s Wyckerveld reconstruction district, the former Mosa factory sites, the Maastricht ring road, and the historic Amsterdam School housing districts of Gulden and Geldmaker (1920s), while orienting itself toward the Franciscus Romanusweg.

The sculptural volume serves multiple purposes:

  • Noise mitigation: The building shields Wyckerveld from tunnel and traffic noise.
  • Residential quality: Wide galleries with benches create intimate, elevated “streets” for social interaction.
  • Ground-floor engagement: Houses feature extra height and small front gardens to integrate with the street.
  • Visual identity: Facade articulation emphasizes the building’s hinge point, with outward-projecting staircases and a crown motif inspired by Amsterdam architect Wijdeveld.

Constructed primarily of red brick to harmonize with surrounding homes, the design distinguishes itself with unique color joints and accents framed with red glazed bricks arranged in a distinctive tile pattern. The building’s balanced massing and orientation maximize views and natural light for upper-level apartments while respecting the urban scale of Wyckerpoort.

Photographs by Arjen Schmitz capture the building’s careful materiality, architectural articulation, and integration into the evolving urban fabric of Maastricht. Manufacturers and materials featured include FSB Franz Schneider Brakel, Forbo, Kegro, Mosa, Sikkens, St Joris brickwork, Tarkett, Tibelly, and VANDERSANDEN, reflecting a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
