The Becva River Bridge, designed by Strasky, Husty a partneri (SHP), is a stunning example of modern bridge design, seamlessly blending functionality, aesthetics, and engineering innovation. Located between the small villages of Usti and Cernotin in the Czech Republic, this bridge is part of the bicycle path connecting Karlovice and Tovacov, offering both practical and scenic benefits.


Design and Structure
Architectural Vision

The bridge's slender and transparent structure, characterized by its V-shaped pylons and elegant curves, reflects a harmonious relationship with the environment.

The bridge features a prestressed concrete deck with three spans of 15.75 meters, 105 meters, and 15.75 meters. The deck is suspended by two inclined suspension cables, with a maximum sag of 11.50 meters in the middle span. The 18.50-meter tall concrete pylons form a distinctive V-shape, contributing to both the bridge's stability and its modern aesthetic.

The use of prestressed concrete in the deck allows for a streamlined cross-section, enhancing the bridge's strength and durability. The deck, composed of 45 prefabricated segments, is longitudinally prestressed by tendons, ensuring it can withstand dynamic loads from both pedestrian traffic and environmental factors like wind.


Suspension System
The suspension cables are formed by locked coil strands, providing robust support for the bridge deck. These cables are fixed and connected with the central segment, with longitudinal prestressing tendons, bearings, and expansion joints anchored at the end segments. This innovative suspension system contributes to the bridge's overall stability and longevity.


Functional Design
Bicycle and Pedestrian Pathway
The Becva River Bridge is designed to be a comfortable and safe passage for cyclists and pedestrians. The width between the railings is 3.50 meters, providing ample space for users. The walkway is lit by LED lights situated in the handrails, ensuring visibility and safety during nighttime use.


Flood Management
Concurrent with the bridge construction, the riverbed was widened to address flood issues in the area. This dual-purpose approach showcases how modern bridge design can integrate practical engineering solutions with aesthetic considerations.
