The Sideway Apartment, designed by Ashari Architects, is a striking example of modern Iranian residential architecture, located at the western entrance of Shiraz, Iran. This mixed-use building seamlessly integrates commercial and residential spaces, demonstrating innovative approaches to urban design, sustainability, and aesthetic cohesion.

Location

Situated along a bustling main boulevard, the Sideway Apartment addresses a dual challenge: creating harmony with pedestrians at ground level and providing an engaging visual experience for drivers at elevated viewpoints. The building stands as a gateway to Shiraz, blending contemporary design principles with the cultural context of the city.

Design Philosophy

Ground Floor: A Neutral Urban Interface

The architects prioritized creating a neutral and harmonious ground-floor appearance, designed to foster smooth interaction with pedestrians and passersby. The commercial spaces are visually integrated with the surrounding urban fabric, reducing distractions and promoting a cohesive streetscape.

Upper Floors: Dynamic Residential Aesthetics

The residential upper floors contrast the ground floor with a dynamic design. Vertical blades, angled to mitigate western sunlight and maximize southern light, adorn the façade. These elements create rhythmic patterns that enliven the structure’s appearance while serving as a functional feature for climate control. The terraced balconies, interwoven with the vertical elements, add texture and depth to the building’s façade.

Sustainability and Sunlight Management

One of the project’s standout features is its innovative approach to managing Shiraz’s intense western sunlight. The vertical blades not only provide shade but also enhance the building’s energy efficiency. These blades, combined with terraced floors, ensure that the interiors remain naturally lit while minimizing heat gain.

Façade Design and Visual Impact

A Unified Appearance

The architects ensured a cohesive design across all facades, acknowledging the building’s visibility from multiple angles. The chamfered edges align with the primary façade’s vertical elements, offering a seamless appearance for viewers approaching from different directions.

North-Western and South-Eastern Facades

To address visibility and light control challenges, hollow concrete modules were used on the north-western and south-eastern facades. These modular elements provide a porous texture, offering a balance of light, privacy, and aesthetic simplicity.

Interior Layout and Functionality

The interior design reflects the same attention to detail as the exterior. Commercial spaces on the ground floor are designed for accessibility and visibility, while the residential floors prioritize comfort, privacy, and access to natural light. The modular design ensures flexibility for various residential layouts.

The Sideway Apartment by Ashari Architects is a testament to the potential of modern Iranian residential architecture. By blending functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic innovation, it serves as a benchmark for urban design in Shiraz and beyond. The project highlights the importance of integrating local context with contemporary design strategies, offering inspiration for architects and urban planners worldwide.
