Modern Traditional Home Renovation: A Case Study of Pear Tree House / Glasshouse
The article showcases Pear Tree House / Glasshouse, a masterful blend of traditional charm and modern sophistication in home renovation.
Modern traditional home renovation represents the harmonious blending of classic architectural elements with contemporary design and functionality. The Pear Tree House / Glasshouse, situated in Prospect, Australia, serves as a prime example of how a boutique architecture and construction firm, Glasshouse, masterfully executes this concept.

The Essence of Pear Tree House / Glasshouse
The Client's Vision
The client envisioned a modern extension that remained sympathetic to the original character of their 1890 sandstone cottage. The challenge was to enhance the home's traditional charm with modern amenities and design, ensuring a seamless transition between the old and new parts of the home.

Architectural Solution by Glasshouse
Glasshouse undertook a comprehensive renovation and extension project, transforming the Pear Tree House into a 305 m² masterpiece. The project included a structured floating box connected to a sunken garden and a rectangular pool, elevating the home's traditional aesthetics with modern sophistication.

Key Features of the Renovation
Combining Old and New
The renovation focused on reconfiguring the older back part of the home to create private retreats and communal spaces for entertainment and socializing. This approach maintained the original sandstone cottage's charm while introducing a 300 sqm modern extension.

Functional and Aesthetic Enhancements
The new master bedroom with an ensuite, dining, kitchen, butler's pantry, laundry, powder room, guest bathroom, study, pool, and outdoor living area were all part of the extension. Additionally, clever design allowed the garage to be recessed via sliding timber panels, enhancing outdoor entertaining space. A new side entry with parking added practicality and direct access to the kitchen and living areas.

The Impact of Modern Traditional Home Renovation
The Pear Tree House / Glasshouse project by Glasshouse highlights the potential of modern traditional home renovation to enrich the living experience. By blending the timeless appeal of traditional architecture with contemporary design and functionality, homeowners can enjoy the best of both worlds. This case study exemplifies how thoughtful design and construction can transform a property into a sophisticated, functional, and aesthetically pleasing home.
