When a House Becomes a Home

More House by Spacefiction Studio in Hyderabad redefines the very essence of domestic architecture. Rather than merely providing shelter, this project explores what a home can evoke—how spaces cultivate emotion, memory, and experience. The central question guiding the design is simple yet profound: Does the feeling of a space depend on its tangible elements, such as furniture and décor, or is it shaped by the intangible qualities—light, volume, wind, and the rhythm of daily life?

Every element of More House stems from this inquiry, creating a residence that transcends conventional boundaries.

Nature as a Living Element

At the core of More House is a belief that a home is a living, breathing entity, shaped by experiences and interaction with its environment. The architects have strategically infused islands of greenery within the interiors, allowing natural light to cascade from above, animating spaces throughout the day. From internal windows and half-open doors to marble reflections and upper-level bridges, light and shadow play a constant game of hide-and-seek, creating dynamic spatial narratives.

Trees grow alongside residents, shadows dance across walls, and clouds drift over the triple-height central volume—blurring the line between inside and outside. The carefully cultivated internal vegetation forms microhabitats, welcoming butterflies and indigenous birds, offering a serene refuge amidst the urban chaos.

Architectural Design & Spatial Planning

The residence is thoughtfully raised to accommodate essential services below, while the two main bedrooms face the roadside, buffering heat and urban noise. A guest room is discreetly positioned on the terrace, providing privacy and intimacy. The heart of the home—the kitchen, living, and dining spaces—is organized within a triple-height central volume, fostering open, fluid interactions.

The ground floor gently steps down toward the roadside, creating a double-height outdoor gathering space enveloped by the metal facade. This design shields the interior from prying eyes while maintaining visual and spatial continuity.

Materiality & Aesthetic Harmony

The choice of materials emphasizes muted elegance and seamless continuity. Lime-finished walls, polished marble floors, concrete ceilings, and custom doors share a cohesive color palette, ensuring that transitions between spaces remain visually effortless. This subtle harmony nurtures calm and focus, reinforcing the home’s central theme: a retreat from urban chaos.

The western facade is protected by a metal veil, softened by strategically placed planters, which shield against harsh sunlight while contributing to the residence’s verdant character. This secondary skin simultaneously provides privacy and visual relief, contrasting with the monotonous urban streetscape outside.

Experiential Design: Light, Wind, and Sound

The design of More House places a strong emphasis on sensory experiences. Breezes flow freely through well-placed openings, while Carnatic music performed occasionally within the home resonates through the hollow central space, amplifying the sense of serenity. The architecture encourages a choice of calm over chaos, reflection over distraction, and mindful engagement with the surrounding environment.
