A Harmonious Blend of Architecture and Nature

The Mulix House by Arkham Projects is a modern architectural masterpiece in Mérida, Mexico, designed as a serene oasis deeply connected to its lush natural surroundings. Every aspect of the residence has been carefully crafted to integrate seamlessly with the environment, creating an atmosphere of peace, balance, and timeless elegance.

From the very first glance, the home captivates with its bold, floating upper volume—a striking element that dominates the façade. During the day, this upper block appears as a solid, monolithic structure, offering privacy and shade. At night, it transforms into a glowing lantern, illuminated from within, becoming a welcoming beacon.

Architectural Concept and Layout

The primary design goal was to merge modern architectural design with nature without compromising comfort or privacy. A lateral courtyard forms the heart of the home, designed as a triple-height atrium that visually connects all three levels. This courtyard allows abundant natural light to pour in and frames picturesque views of gardens, trees, and the open sky.

The residence is organized to maximize outdoor views and cross ventilation. On the north and south facades, overhangs protect interiors from direct sunlight while allowing gentle daylight to filter through. Meanwhile, the east and west facades are strategically more open or closed, depending on privacy and solar orientation.

A Journey Through the House

Entry & Social Spaces

Access to Mulix House begins with a wide staircase surrounded by native vegetation, leading to a small exterior hall that directs you either to the main social area or towards the outdoor terrace.

The open-plan living room, dining area, and kitchen are designed to either merge into a single expansive space or function independently. Fully opening the sliding panels creates a seamless connection to nature on both sides, allowing refreshing cross breezes and uninterrupted views of the green landscape.

The Central Courtyard

The home’s signature element is its central courtyard, which is visible even from the basement level thanks to the triple-height design. A bridge walkway connects different sections of the home, offering a unique indoor-outdoor experience where one side overlooks a lush garden while the other faces an English courtyard.

Upper Level & Private Areas

The upper level houses the children’s bedrooms, which feature views towards the street through an automated wooden lattice that ensures both openness and privacy. The master suite is located towards the rear, offering panoramic views of surrounding greenery. The master bathroom includes a freestanding bathtub that opens onto a private terrace—perfect for enjoying an outdoor bath in the Yucatán breeze.

Sustainability and Comfort

Casa Mulix is designed for climate responsiveness, balancing openness with protection from the elements. Its orientation, natural cross ventilation, and selective openings reduce the need for artificial cooling. The materials, textures, and finishes reflect the natural palette of the region, reinforcing its bond with the local environment.
